Will changing the html and graphical content of my website affect search result ranks

I've been working on my new website design for a few months with different html coding, new images and graphical content. I've tried to maintain the same text content and tags so the search engines can still recognize my site. I've moved the text around in my new site. I've worked very hard and with some main key words, my site resulted in the first top few results in search engines.

Will updating and completely changing the html coding and graphical content but maintaining the text change my ranking results in search engines?

    Thanks for your help!

Did you label your original images? Were any of your images or anchor links indexed? It's possible it could have a short term affect on search engine rankings. But if it's a big site improvement that you think will help your site grow, I'd go for it and then keep plugging away doing some SEO.

Thanks for your answer. I was thinking about going for it as well.

If you mean label my original images as in giving them specific customs names, I did do that. I'm not entirely sure if my images or anchor links were indexed. I don't know what that means. I'm sorry for my ignorance. I never actually took a course in coding, it's all been self taught trial and error.

I think I have good ranking due to having my website linked from many of my Youtube videos. The videos are quite popular and are embedded on hundreds of other public sites. If that's the reason why I have good ranking, it shouldn't affect my results if I change the layout would it?

    Hi,
IMO if you are using more tables, Iframes, Lists in your new HTML code definately your rankings will be affected. I dont know how you have planned to redesign it, but 99% sure it will be affected. If its better than previous one, be happy....dont worry. Just keep basics in mind and pass a check on your html code online for any eooros & warnings.

Also , do notice that Google has new panda update which is hitting sites with ads on first fole or upper part of website. Try avoiding that. You can keep ads, but keep it low in your page

    Thanks

changing content and coding will not harm your site but content should we related to the previous one. You need to properly tag your images target your keyword in the in the H1 ,H2 and H3 tag.

Thanks so much for that helpful link. I tested my site and it all works fine.

I've used the same meta keywords as my old website for my new site so hopefully it'll still show up on the search engines with the same ranking.

    Thanks everyone for your answers:)

it's tricky, I once changed just the design as well as some small tweaks but lost some rankings in the process, so I was quick to put the old version back :)

I just replaced my old website with my new site. I cleared cache on my browser and I still have the same rankings as my previous site. Does it take a few days before Google looks at the new coding and adjusts the ranking?
