Will canonical URL change affect search results for that page?

Would changing the canonical URL for a given page have an effect on rankings? My intuition is that it shouldnt, but any thoughts are appreciated.

And apologies if this is the wrong place for the thread but I couldnt find a place to put on-page SEO issues.

It’s good to have canonical URL in the website to avoid duplicate page.
