Will buying a text link still increase your Page Rank?

Provided that the link is NOT nofollowed and Google recognizes that the website where your link is placed is selling links.

Just wondering because I'm planning to buy some text links and was wonderfully if it still helps. My primarily aim is not traffic but PR.

Best to go with a follow through attribute, although tbh if your paying for it, it should most definately have a follow through on it...

Alright, thanks guys. Would also like to clarify some assumptions I have for buying links with the sole purpose of increasing PR:

    1. Sitewide link is better than a one-page link
    2. Links should be bought from relevant websites if possible.
    3. Links have better value when they come from websites with as little outgoing links as possible on the page where your link is placed.
    4. Link buying or selling might adversely affect SERPs.
    5. When buying links with the only aim to increase PR, only the PR of the link selling site matters.Traffic and backlinks for the link selling website are not important.
    6. To actually influence or cause an increase in one's PR, the bought link should exist for a minimum of 6 months. Permanent links are always the best highly recommended.

Feel free to let me know if any of them are wrong..thanks!

If you don't want traffic, or more over PR is your main concern look at getting PR backlinks from quality PR pages, and ideally sitewide links. Also try and get PR backlinks from related websites as this will really make a difference due to relevance... google loves relevant linking.

If you want a good PR backlink we have 2 sitewide links avaliable at the Voisd Webmaster Directory. Drop me a PM if your interested. Alternatively if thats out of your budget you could just purchase a regular or sponsored listing in our directory (if your site relates) as most of our pages have a good PR and are well indexed.

Link buying or selling might adversely affect SERPs. - yes
As far 'adversely affecting' goes... when links appear and disappear after a period of time (not good). Anything that looks like the old FFA links is a bad thing. So, go for perm links when possible.

    Otherwise, it's all good!

This is correct. And try to determine the quality of the site/page/link! I dont think you will see the difference for <10 links bought.

I would have to say at least 20+ related links and at least 40+ unrelated links

It did not work for me since i was not having a large budget. I am using my previous authority sites, link requests, some hidden clever ideas (not blackhat :)), and natural links to valuable contents at this stage.

How about links from free directories? How valuable do you think these can be with regard to PR?

Thanks to everyone who replied .. I have a question:

Does a one-page link from a PR 7 (for example) website towards a specific page on your website affect the overall PR rating of the domain itself?

To put it better, will a PR 7 link to http://domain.com/category/postname increase the PR for http://domain.com or will it be limited to the page that the PR 7 links to?

I was hoping it would actually help the main domain... anyone else have any thoughts on this?
