Every day you get some good new features on google and these features are really useful. So, I think google will remain on top.

Yahoo and Live search together are still single digits usage and their search products are just not as good as Google. If Microsoft thought they could take over simply by purchasing Yahoo, they would have tried alot harder than they did. The fact is that Yahoo is dead in the water. Sorry to say...

I like yahoo, and it think if they finally manage to improve their advertising platform (by getting rid of these parking domain ads) and use the extra revenue to improve search experience I wouldn't be surprised at all.

    No,

It needs fresh, bold leadership. That will happen only if
    the company is split (spinoff).

    Spinoff?

Yes, a new company. New leadership.
    Focusing on search. No caretakers.

A merger with Microsoft isn't the answer.
One dinosaur eats the other. It doesn't make a better dinosaur.

    Only eliminates a dinosaur.

    rharper

P.S. How many search companies did Yahoo absorb?
Excite, Altavista, etc.. Did it become better?

    No!

Google will not be the #1 search engine forever, but it will be for a LONG LONG time. Eventually something better than "search engines" will come along and Google will either have to adapt or be obsolete.

Personally, more than 60% of the time when I pull up a web browser its because I need to SEARCH for something. Therefore, my homepage is set to Google.com and always will be!

If I want to read news... ill type in yahoo.com manually and go read news lol not very often though.

Yahoo has too much crap on their homepage. If I just want to search for something, I pull up Google and just type it in without having to look at anything else. And not only that but as I'm typing it in the search box it gives me the BEST pre-set search options to choose from... sometimes I honestly feel like its reading my mind! I've never get that feeling if and when I used Yahoo as a search engine (almost never).

Actually the image of the google has already being fixed in the minds of people, otherwise there are various links of google search that are not at all satisfactory. Would you believe, I am talking about the first page of google search. Its difficult for yahoo but is not impossible.

I don't think Yahoo could ever become top dog with a homepage like this. http://uk.yahoo.com/?p=us

A lot of the brilliance of Google comes from it's very simple homepage.

I do believe that google will stay on top also, as it has become almost a word built into the english language, for instance, if you are confused about something, you will most likely say your going to "google it" Tell me if anyone says "im gonna go yahoo that" in place...I think I have made my point there.

Yahoo is now slowly dying...they are like dinosaurs from the previous Web era. Google is now a king, but if they lose steam, they might be kicked out by some fresh startup, just like they did to Yahoo. History likes to repeat itself :)
