hi.. I'm using quite a lot of plugins for my wordpress blog, it's 18 plugins. Is it OK to use that many plugins? Will it make my blog slower? thanks
Hi Jmotman - Good question. People have noticed some problems with certain plugins, and also that one plugin might have a problem with another plugin. I use a lot on the three CMS sites I manage with WordPress. I also ran into quite a problem with one site slowing down. There are a number of steps you can take when this happens including using a "cache" plugin for WordPress. I wrote about the solution process I went through in this article: Cleaning Your LAMP (the answer has to do with the whole Linux Apache MySQL PHP software package that runs your hosting software and WordPress). It is a good practice to keep the plugins to minimum, more plugins means more work for the server to handle before showing up your page, caching is a solution and minimizing the use of plugins is also a good practice.
hi OSWebMaster and fweikeong, thanks for your reply.. wow I really need some time to learn the Cleaning Your Lamp do you have any posts/tutorial about wordpress caching? sorry I'm still quite new to this thanks
I stick with only the most popular plugins. One plugin I used had a security leak, and my database was deleted within a week. As mentioned, plugins conflict with each other and with different themes, so less is more. Rich
is correct , dont just use any wordpress plugin that you feel like it. And to answer, YES it will slow your blog a little bit but not enough to bother someone. I use the plugin based on my needs: -backup (2) -seo (4) -web traffic ( i use total 7 plugins ) -advertising (2) 3/4 each for each section will do plenty for you. Hope it helped
When I download software I use www.download.com & first read the user reviews of the program before I make a decision as to download the program or not. Are there any sites like this that has a rating system or lets you read about other users opinions on the plug-in if it has caused them problems or has bugs in it.
You might find comments about plugins either on Wordpress.org forums, or at the developers site where the plugin is announced and downloaded. There are the top plugins listed on Wordpress.org. I usually stick pretty close to these, since they are the best tested and most secure. Rich
Hi Jimotman - About caching -- take a good look at this plugin: WordPress Super Cache. There are others, but this one gets good reviews. It addresses a weakness in one of the other cache plugins, and gets around it. Notice that it has its own Support Forum. Good luck - Scott
