Will a good PR backlink to my homepage raise SERPs of my sub pages?

Ok so this may be a silly question but here it goes.

I have a site with say 1000 sub pages (all dynamically generated)

if i buy some high PR backlinks to my main page - will all my other pages under that domain rank higher?

example of a home page (not my site): www.somesiteofmine.com
example of a sub page www.somesiteofmine.com/sometopic/blah/somepage.html

if i buy backlinks to somesiteofmine.com will all my sub pages automatically rank as well?

    thanks.

Nope, search engines rank web pages - not websites. Each page of your website is viewed as a separate entity by the search engines.

But building authority for the main domain really helps. Not sure if the auto generated pages will be seen as any good by Google to include in its index

Just my two cent, PR on the home page are distributed also to another subpages on it's domain. So if you have a site with only one home page with PR 8 then the PR is for itself. If you add some pages to it, lets say 5 pages then the PR8 would be distributed to all the pages. However, I don't know yet how do Google calculate the PR distribution of a site.

I agree with Komrad. Generally the higher the home page rank - the higher the sub pages will be too. Often you will see a home page with PR4 and the sub pages will be either a 2 or a 3 ...but then again I have seen home pages with a 6 and sub pages with a nil.!!!
Of course the ideal situation would be to have some links pointing directly to your sub pages.

Huh? So what kind of websites do you build, one where NONE of the pages are interlinked? Yes, Google ranks web pages, but you apply SEO to a site as a whole and not just individual pages.

As others have said, when you link pages together they will pass on Pagerank to each other. If you have a good site structure, your subpages can rank well without external links as they draw on the strength of the stronger pages (like the home page, for example).

Right, each page is viewed separately. Although, it is still a good idea to rank your home page using links from high PR sites

Yes and Nope..A well placed homepage will allow you to build links for the sub-page without worrying about link polarization i.e a greater page strength as compared to domain strength. However, links to the homepage noway contribute to huge SERP improvement. If at all, they help your pages get indexed properly and lay a stable platform for you to build more links to the inner page without worry about the link distribution to the entire site.

Correct however any pages linked to the main page will recieve pr juice from that page so your answer is half right and half wrong. The answer to the ops question is yes as far as internel pagerank goes, however you still need to build some backlinks to interneal pages with anchor text and seo the pages as well. Also make sure your signt navigation includes your keywords in anchor text in other words if you want page x that is linked from the main page to be ranked high for the keword x widgets then make sure your site navigation included x widgest as the anchor text to that page.

If you have good interlinking, it will raise them a bit. A better way would be to deep-link to one of your subpages, this way your homepage gets some of the juice as well, and as you send more and more to the subpages, more and more are sent to the home page
