Will a 301 work in a Google search, and will it affect my Google rankings?

    Hi all,

Potential customers first find our website by using one of several keywords in Google, then call us for a chat. Most like to have a think before buying, and they like to revisit our website later to read more of the information on our site.

So I want to be able to give them, over the telephone, a nice shortcut URL for their return visit, instead of them going back and using the same keywords as before to re-find our site, thus finding our competitors as well (they use the same keywords in Adwords, also our company name!).

OK so I can buy a suitable short URL no problem (I do not like those generated by goo.gl or tinyurl etc), and set up a 301 redirect on it, but they are still going to punch it into Google to find it (everyone does these days), so my question is will the 301 work if it is typed into their browser's Google search box? Or must the shorcut URL itself be visited?
And if so will it do our Google SERPS any harm?

    Many thanks in advance

They should get redirected, and i don't think it will affect to much the SERPS, but for passing the PR it will take a bit of time.

No harm. and the short url itself be typed in browser.
once the shortcut url get indexed then it may come in Google SERPS.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Davidaylo - why would it affect the SERPS of our main website? We are not trying to distort search results.

Why do a 301? You can just give the website domain so that they can remember it everytime they visit.

Well since domain sellers are using 301 to fake pagerank it might be seen as blackhat... not sure though
