no not necessarily true.. in fact almost certainly not true.
Links help (providing they're quality links of course, not forums, blogs or other low quality pages), but they only tend to speed up the process which would otherwise occur naturally. Its perfectly easy to top a very competitive term with no link building strategy involved whatsoever and purely achieve it by onsite, it just takes a little bit longer thats all. Many people go down link building routes and in generally they're completely the wrong ones and do absolute zero for the authority of the page, even with 10,000 of the things. Quality links from related industry sites, now thats a different matter.

Anyway, the point is , the domain name does indeed only play a part in the ranking factors, it is (or rather is/was) a very very important one. you can top a search result by having a domain name which matches the phrase, but it has to be an exact match.

examples are examples, plucked from the air.. replace with whatever term you wish.

Oh, while were on.. dont believe any stats or statements from any SEO site. None of it can be taken seriously or adhered to unless you see it repeated across several (ie loads) of sites or sources.

I would be very interested to learn more about the onsite strategies you are describing. If you would be so kind as to elaborate or steer me in the right direction to do some research I'd be very grateful : )

:D assuming that wasnt a windup reply... its basic stuff. Relational pages, common sense and intelligent markup, good housekeeping (checking and fixing your site index is massively important), and content which relates to your target audience/visitor. Only when all of those are working together properly will the site present itself at its best. unfortunately it takes a committed effort to achieve.. but then so does link building.
Of course, if you combine it with a good link building strategy, theres no stopping you.

Don't forget about the keyword rich domain name and strategically named categories/sub-directories ;)

    RE: 3dMovies.in

admittedly, i do not know enough about the .in market, but i would have to assume that this is an emerging extension... i have 3dMovie.es and i would rather hold it a a year or two (or three) longer than sell at that price... 3dMovie is a safe keeper... i would have held or at least countered a bit higher - before pushing to auction... congrats though.

does anybody else see .in as an emerging extension?
    i have 3dMobilePhone.in

    RE: 3dInternet.net
    Geek... sweet name man!!
... i'm still so unsure about 3d dot nets... i say that in my own 'curious-disappointment' (?), owning Streaming3d.net, Social3d.net, LIVE3d.net, 3dVacations.net, 3dEvents.net and a few others that are top shelf... no nibbles on my end... although, my 3dadult dot net names get some 'decent' hits and tire kickers.

i do think that $10k is awfully high as well for a speculative dot net....
...but i can also understand not wanting to sell too soon unless it's worth it
.. so Best of Luck to ya !!!

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

    @Stu

    you're a funny dude man

... not because of this name
... but this name is HORRIBLE!!!!
    hahaha

making matters worse is that you're actually running around the internet telling everybody about it
    .. THAT'S what's so fumy

what r u thinking here... and even more... what r u expecting?

    in kinder words...
tip of the hat to you on your 3dTablets.net grab the other day.
I spent the last few days in Disney so if that was a drop - thank Mickey for not having to fight me for it
    haha
    GDA ?

good luck with it - great name (see above)

3dmoneyshots would have been better than that
3dbukake would have been better as well
3dsybian would also have been better
    3dSpitballs too

    (all available - except bukake)

    3d creampies is a loser
