Can someone please explain to me what a wiki is, in plain english for me? I have asked several people, they all just send me the definition from wikipedia....... I just dont really understand what would be soo great about it.

I have been reading more and more articles stating that wikis are going to be a good way to get se rankings in the future.

Basically the idea of wikis is to get people to collaborate to develop a useful resource on any given topic. People can contribute/edit articles at any given time.

That's the impression I got from it anyway! :)

So, is it a topic that the wiki owner creates? And if it is, how is it regulated? I guess I just dont understand how it would be moderated, or what would make someone want to participate in it.

Some people seem to really like community based stuff like wikis. Personally I don't but hey!

The topic - I suppose the wiki owner can dictate and moderate in the early stages. Write the first few articles on that topic yourself to encourage others to contribute.

Once you get "regulars" contributing articles they will start to moderate the articles as well. When someone changes an article people watching that articles will be able to check whether the change is appropriate or not and take the appropriate action.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will contribute to this thread as I've only just started to run a wiki so I can't be too sure about what I'm talking about.
