Maybe I dont understand how wikipedia works. I went in there to a category that I have a similiar site to. I clicked edit and added my site as an external link. It showed up on the page. Am I missing something? Dont these links get reviewed?
Agreed. I also checked out a more "commercial page" and it wouldnt allow me to edit the external links. Maybe its only informational sites. But it still dont seem right.
My understanding is that the page can be edited by anybody but other users can remove your link or vote to remove the link. If the link is useful and not a blatant advert then its more likely to stay
Yes, that's basically it. A colleague of mine who dabbles in the slightly darker side of the grey area of SEO actually had his IPO banned from Wikipedia for posting and re-posting links to some of his less than good sites. But I have added some links to some pages in my sites that are more informational, and they have been left in. Toonces51
If you add a quality website to en.wikipedia, you might have a great backlink. I've got a couple of those too. Links in most other language wikipedia pages are standard nofollowed, though.
they do get reviewd. and they keep the database for every change. So they can easily revert back. There are few pages though which you can not edit like George Bush's page(last time I checked it,it was locked).
This has been one of my tricks for the past few months. Yes, you can just add anything to a page you want. You can even add an external links section to a page that has none. I've found that Wiki pages have an average PR of 5. I even managed to get a few PR 6s for free. Because of this Wikipedia is the second largest referral URL to one of my sites after Google. There is a downside though. Wikipedia must have some way of tracking the IP address that makes the changes and flags your IP if you are making too many changes. I would be subtle about your additions and don't get too carried away. Plus your competition can come in and change any part of your link.
Thanks for sharing this. I was under the impression that it automatically reverted after like an hour or two.
No, but each change must be reviewed by a moderator before it is made permanent. Last week I got a a PR6 from Wikipedia
They dont allow sites that contain adsense , when a site contain commericals or advertise they are removed depend on when they see it
True the number of external websites as well as sites that contain adsense links are few and far between. They will remove such sites even when you try your luck adding your site - so be away from them
Its odd that a link without any ads on it was removed for me but links with ads on it stayed. I would agree that sites with ads will have less of a chance sticking it just the opposite happened to me.
this is just personal speculation based on my own experience with wikipedia, BUT... ive found that the links here seem to be discounted on G (atleast somewhat) but work very well for MSN and Yahoo. like i said i have no evidence of this, but i have submitted many sites to wiki over the last 10 months or so and that's the feeling i've gotten..
Wikipedia monitors every link that is added to their site and removes which are non-relevant and added to gain seo benefit. But if the link that is added is of value to that category, it is not removed.
[rant] Wikipedia is a collaborative work of art created by labours of millions of ppl. Seriosly it sucks if you want to undermine its usefulness just to get some cheap backlinks. Try something else guys. [/rant]
My advice is to try adding the link. If it sticks, be glad. Otherwise, forget it. Some pages are just too hard, usually due to several fanboys being extremely overprotective over that particular page.
Fan boys like me. If it is outa topic, be sure it will be deleted in like an hour or two. If its on topic it is a help to visitors of wikipedia and it stays.
