yes it's legal, but duplicate content is not favored in the big search engines. You're better off writing your own content or modifying the wikipedia content yourself than cloning the information.

Yes it is legal lots of people do it. That's where I get photos for my site from

but make sure that not all of the content on your site is from wiki then whats the point of your site. It has no value because basically it provied nothing new.

I've heard of some people that simply take Wikipedia articles, rewrite them a bit (changing a word here and there) and then filling their whole with it.

Your best bet would be to copy content off Wikipedia and then modify it around to your liking and it is then that you can get off any danger and it should be done this way.

Wikipedia: Shakespeare was a pathetic idiot
You: Shakespeare is sometimes classified as an idiot.

Wikipedia for facts is fine, but not for cloning.

It isn't always a reliable source for facts either. If facts and accurate is what you are concerned about, one should never rely on one source when researching.

In regards to using Wikipedia content, it can not be used in any manner one wants. While the terms for using Wikipedia's content is very liberal, the content is still protected by copyrights and can only be used in accordance to their "copyleft" licensing scheme. If you are going to use their content (even just their photos), take the time to read and obey their terms and conditions. Someone provided a link above.
