Fellow Wikipedians come to a consensus on the external links added to Wikipedia. Being one I see many people attempting to slip in their own links to Wikipedia, but they soon get removed. However, if the external link you add is truly encyclopedic and offers something to the article that you cannot place in the Wikipedia itself, then you may well get away with it. Albeit, you must be fairly respected on Wikipedia, and although Wikipedians are taught to always assume good faith, they will research the article by any means possible, and if they find just one instant where your username resolves to the website, it'll be removed straight away. You cannot add websites you are associated with in any way. Even if you're adding an external link that is in no way affiliated with you, it'll be removed if it is deemed unnecessary. Most of the external links you see will be of great interest to the article, but keep in mind that Wikipedia is not a link directory.
