    Alexa is somewhat flawed as it only tracks sites by using the Alexa toolbar.

    That's nowhere near an accurate indication but is a good rough guide to a sites popularity. :)

    Alexa is quite accurate when it gets up into the double and single digits.

    That is true, but the bottom line is that it is ranked only by people that have the Alexa toolbar installed, that is the point I was making. :)

    Obviously, but the point being made is that the population with alexa toolbar is suffcient to make a statistical analysis for the top sites. If you are talking about sites below 100,000 that is a different story.

    3 and 12 might look close but if you consider the actual traffic, there will be a huge difference.

    I think that their arrogance and incompetence will get them long before their enemies do.

    Read their search engines first page. Wikipedia did good for most of the keywords in google, might do even better with their own.

    People have been saying that about Microsoft for years... Linux in the workplace this, and antitrust lawsuit that. Years later, I'm still on a Windows machine at work and have yet to work in an office that used Linux as the desktop OS. (I know they are out there, just haven't worked at one.. about the closest I have come is an office that used all Citrix terminal servers and "dumb" terminals)

    So I'm doubtful when I hear that their arrogance and incompetence will be the death of them. Microsoft is PLENTY arrogant and even more "incompetent" and they're still goin' strong. (at least my OS doesn't shoot out Blue Screens twice a week any more..)

    Then again, nobody thought IBM could fall as king of the PC market, but I think Google's a bit more innovative than good ol' big blue.. :)

    In 2006, IBM received more U.S. patents than any other company -- for the 13th year in a row.

    There's a good article on the businessweek.com website regarding the Wikipedia search engine.

    key points;
    -Jimmy Wales owner of of both realizes he's in for the long haul
    -he has $4 million in backing
    -search will be separate company which will be for profit
    -it'll serve ads
    -Lots of ways to play with the results by sorting which than may affect how those results are displayed for other users. I can see this being open to black hat BIG time. Strong keywords = dozens of off-shore searches going 24/7 working the results for you-ouch.

    Read the article at (its the top story today)
