Wikia Search launched and so far looks like it's pretty disappointing, some of my searches returned less than 10 results, not even talking about indexing my sites... What are your experiences?
It says they are aware the search quality is low. "We are aware that the quality of the search results is low.." http://alpha.search.wikia.com/about.html Also it says Alpha in the URL - hey it's just a stab. The searches I did were ok, except for my name "eric frost" I did not see myself in the top 10 :-( Eric
Not just the quality, I have already had low expectations seeing that it is still in alpha. But it does not even meet my low expectations, searching seem to miss by a mile and the speed of the search is horrendous. It tried to adopt the simple and neat nature of the Google search but other than the web site design the rest still have an extremely long distance to go before it can even catch up with the smaller search engines not to mention the dominant player in the industry Google! I feel that they might as well buy over some unknown small search engines and inject their content inside rather than reinvent the wheel.
A bit sad I was hoping against my more logical thoughts that Wiki might somehow launch something respectable that gives Google or at least Live or Yahoo a run for their money. But they seem to launch just for the sake of launching faster than Google, looks and behave like a unfinished prototype. Hopefully their beta would be much better or least they don't stand any chance at all against Google.
The results are terrible. Performed 4-5 different searches and none provided a satisfactory result. IMHO - They should have waited till they could get the basics right before launching. You can't make a second 1st impression.
I'll support an open engine as long as it continues to make an effort to improve, I'd like to see it succeed even if it takes a long while to do so.
Wikia Search is very slow and it does not performing well for even very common keywords. I don't see any need for such a product.
You can't judge a product that's still in alpha testing but I can't see it coming close to Google. Google's just too far ahead.
Looks exciting, hope it does well since I own a bunch of wiki domains, but I would miss the days of Google if that ever happens.
