Im about to run a link campaign for a site which deals primarily with "widget news" although there is general widget content too. Now, anchor text wise, would you go with "widget" or "widget news"? Thanks Andrew

i rather go for widget news. since yr site is primarily widget news, so its the best to be as relevent as possible...

yes, widget news would be so much better. I believe that by using widget news as your keyword you'd be included in "widget news", "widget" and "news". and besides it would be more specific.
i can't give you an advise on the SEO part, but I would more easily click on widget news then widget.
IMO, widget news, widget is much broaders, so you're going to have more competitors trying to optimise for that. Phrases seem to be what Google 'likes' these days..
