In the long run, your going to be much happier with wordpress. Even though a lot of people like joomla, its really a low grade and low quality cms. The joomla project has some serious issues, such as not even having a built in commenting system, lack of integration with most popular forums, lack of real support in the joomla forums, and several other things. Then there is the bloat. Joomla is full of bloat, it runs about as fast as a dead dog. When wordpress is streamlined, slim, trim and fast. Its the simple things that really sets wordpress apart, such as having search engine friendly urls right out of the box. But if you want them with joomla, you have to install modifications.
WP is a blogging script. And joomla is a complete CMS. So, if u r willing to open a blog site or a simple site WP is the best. if u want a site which will have different features or u want to add different new option on site joomla is best. I have added chat room and user private messing on my site by Joomla! I designed some complete news site using joomla! but I feel boring to create blogging and simple site by joomla.
Technically, a CMS is any platform that manages content. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Concrete5, SilverStripe, SNews, etc., can all be lumped into that very large category. The issue is one of functionality and extensibility. What does the system come with "out of the box", and how readily can you extend it? WP's roots are indeed blogging, and it is not a fully-featured CMS out of the box like Joomla, absolutely no question about that. However, WP is merging with WP-MU and is being moved more towards CMS functionality as per several articles posted across the Web. To say that WP is a "blogging script" is not quite accurate today. Similarly, Drupal and Joomla are really "application frameworks", meaning you don't have to use them to blog if you don't want to. In fact, with application frameworks, you can completely ignore native blogging/content features and use the system as a foundation. The bottom-line concern is the technical sophistication level of the user, and what that person really wants to accomplish with his or her website. Drupal and Joomla may be too much of a good thing at times. WP provides a good alternative where someone can really put together an amazing site without the relatively steep learning curves that Drupal and Joomla require.
Personally I like Wordpress better. The only problem with any open source system are viruses and security leaks. You need to make sure to have installed all necessary plugins, which will protect you against comment spam, viruses, troyans, etc. But Wordpress is the best CMS for me.
I agree with Bratzilla, Joomla is truly an out of the box CMS with tons of components, however I think Wordpress is on its way to be a full blown CMS that will be able to handle all types of websites and applications. Developers are constantly adding to its plugin library and while some of the plug-ins can be buggy, I think overall they are useful and will be improved upon in the future.....
This is not a true and correct statement. Joomla right "out of the box" lacks a lot of very basic features, such as a commenting system for the articles. Just about everything has to be added to joomla to make it a well rounded piece of software. Joomla gives you the basic building blocks, and then you have to go hunt for everything else. Even very basic features, such as search engine friendly urls, joomla requires an add-on, while wordpress has that feature built in. Commenting on articles - joomla requires an add-on, wordpress has it built in. A quality what you see is what you get editor (visual) - joomla requires an add-on, while wordpress has it built in. When you do a side-by-side basic install of wordpress and joomla, wordpress is superior to joomla in lots of ways.
Um... yeah, what kev said. "out of the box" for Joomla means that it comes with centralized user management and other stuff that makes it "plug and play" so to speak. Joomla DOES NOT come READY MADE for much of anything besides com_content. Sorry if I didn't make that distinction clear earlier.
I have to disagree, Wordpress is great for blogging but Joomla is the businezzzz. All my sites are created with joomla as a foundation!!!. Highly recommended.
Wordpress is suitable for blogging and Joomla is there for CMS for professional websites. Wordpress is very much optimized for Search Engine and even you can use SEO Plugin like "All in one SEO" for doing that.
This has always been the question! Well I give my vote to WordPress. Not because its a blogging system or something. But because I being not a programmer can host many website with WP as base and do wonderful things.. Here are two example of some great potentials of WP. www.forum4finance.com <--- a financial portal and PHPBB forum as well. WP handles the articles part. www.waapsols.com <--- a community, using BuddyPress and Wordpress MU.
