It partly depends on how much money you have to spend. For example, a proxy site might cost a lot for hosting, while a myspace layouts site would cost very little to make. Of course as mentioned earlier, it's a good idea to create a site that you're interested in. Also what script would you use to create a free hosting site? I may want to try this. Thanks, Kyle
The easiest to set up and maintain is a proxy site. Hosting for 2 medium size proxies making about $20-$30 each a month in adsense would cost you $5-$6 a month. Of course you'd need to advertise as well. You can do that on your own or buy advertising for about $5-10 per proxy. Start with 1-2 proxies and if it works out scale up your operations. While there are thousands if not millions of proxies, there is always demand for more since they get blocked (even if they do you still get traffic and revenue because they don't get blocked by every network admin) I wrote a small post on my Proxy Hosting blog that will help you understand what's involved. It really depends how much work you want to put into setting up and promoting it. Plus how much ongoing work. Some of the site types like Arcade or Proxy don't take much once they get going. However, a dating site or a directory that manually approves listing is going to take a lot more.
You should start something that you are not going to get sick of in 3 months from now ... something you have a knowledge in ... you are not going to install it and the money is going to come right in ... a website needs attention and some hard work ... so it better be in something that you are interested in
They're all profitable in their own way. If you can do a killer Arcade site, but only a mediocre Directory, go arcade. It really matters how much time and effort you put into something. Some niches may pay more per click (adsense), but are also very difficult to market as well, while arcades are easy to market.
Proxy is better option to opt. Start you can then move with some niche directories as well, work hard for SEO with that.
