Why

Why do directories that use ODP data never seem to update? That is so irritating. Sites are added to dmoz daily, and sites shut down all the time as well. I lothe using a directory that hasnt updated in 6 months -

Probably because it's a pain in the butt to update.

Some of those directories people have and don't do much with.

It is not there priority. (note, I do not own a dmoz clone, but know a few poeple that do)

I've considered a dmoz mirror, but it's too much of a pain in the butt to accomplish. There are no free scripts out there that are reliable, at least that I found. So that means you have to write your own and then figure out why it crashed if it did. I imagine that there are plenty of people out there in the same boat.

    Hi Nevets,

Firstly, most directories do update. Very few actually bother with a full mirror of the DMOZ dataset. Instead, they grab the data as each request arrives, either from a local cache, or from the dmoz site if not in the local cache.

I've not had any problems with phpodp. It is free by the way (for all intents and purposes) and seems simple enough.

Have you had problems with phpodp ?

    Cheers,

    JL

There are probably around ~4000 DMOZ clones out there that disagree with you.
