Why Youtube Ads Suck!!

I was really excited about the announcement of the YouTube + Adsense product. On my website I have some video tutorials that and though this would add a nice boost to my income.

However what I quickly discovered is that although you can provided keywords you cannot specify which video you want to display on your site within the ad unit.

So for now all you can do is have random videos. I personally have no use for this and if one day they allow you to choose the video(s) you show then I might jump on board but for now I am not impressed and disappointed. They hyped it up only for it to end up being a box with a video and a image banner above. You can do better Google.

    Do you agree or disagree?

Look at the bottom of the homepage for an example of the Video unit in action. This on works on the key words "iPhone Apps".

you have to choose either a category, or rely on the google keyword targeting to choose videos from the selected content providers.

google can't blindly put ads on every youtube video, because there would be too many copyright violations.

in a perfect world, you could create your own video and request to be included as one of the selected video content providers, but i can't see where they let you sign up for that.

I understand what you are saying about not being able to just do every video. But we have all seen the power Google has to mostly keep users in check and not abuse the system. I just don't see this catching on without someone being able to specify the video.

I also agree that if you upload the video yourself you should absolutely be able to select that video.

one problem is that the youtube tos does not allow other sites to use youtube videos for commercial purposes... even though many people are doing it with adsense.

from a google email that i just received:

    "Dear AdSense Publisher,

We're excited to announce video units, a new way to enrich your site with quality, relevant video content on an embedded, customizable YouTube player... If you have video content of your own, you may even be able to sign up as a YouTube partner to have your content distributed to other AdSense publishers' video units."

so where do we sign up as youtube partners?

Yea it sucks right now. since youtube has some default car video or something shitty. My adsense changes to content that matches the youtube instead of my website. I guess I'll have to place the youtube video not anywhere near my adsense

hey, when adsense first came out it wasn't perfect. Probably in a couple months it will be much better. I don't want to be the beta tester to say the least lol.

What's the point if you can't choose the video?

The site is pretty new and not getting much traffic right now. So I have only had about 100 impressions and 1 click but it was for $0.21. Not to bad but not able to tell you how it will be yet.

I haven't heard a lot of people say positive things about this so far, but maybe things will get better once more video publishers participate.

more publishers won't help anything, what's needed is more content to put the ads on.

You can create a custom playlist which will show the videos you specify. Other than that, you're at the mercy of keywords in your meta data tags & content of your pages to play random videos you have no control over.

I guess it works the same as adsense in that you can't choose your video. That bites. Adsense usually does pretty good picking the right ads, but sometimes it shows stuff not exactly related to my site, which is annoying, and I can't imagine trying out videos that I can't even choose myself.

Their was a video that Google Youtube came out with. It was called inovation at google. They talked about their different products and how they usually sucked the first few months. They said that they pretty much always learn from their mistakes and improve the product as it goes along. Look at Gmail, it used to suck but now it's awesome.

just about every adsense product that google has come out with since the original contextual ads has had a lousy payout, lets go thru the list:

    image ads suck
    site-targeted cpm ads suck
    video ads suck
    referral 2.0 ads suck
now this video ad product sucks

what has been decent? do firefox referrals still work for you guys?

True that Mental, I agree, all of a sudden today, my youtube generated site(s) had a quick change in the you tube player & playlists.. It's like GMAIL, this adsense advice is about to get awesome.. I guess only select few are invited /aware/ part of the adsense youtube video units. Mostly view "adsense for content" in their adsense setup pages & channels. After thresholds, of say the pre-liminary $100 USD the average adsense user will gain access to more levels of their affiliate program.

    My 2 cents...

Now i am going to finish signing up, but i ain't about to put that on my blog or sites yet.

    Let me get this straight:

    1. You can't pick the video, or neven pick close to the video you want.
Thats sucks so hard you can hear it.

    2. Now your a-ads are targeted to the video and not your content.
That blows so hard it blew down whatever was making the sucking sound in #1.

Yea i will not be using this feature accept on maybe my "dont know what to do with/havent got time to deal with yet", pages.

good question... i can't see that chime.tv is generating any income at this point, i suspect that they are just trying to drive traffic to the site.

when they do try to monitize, tho, it's going to be a copyright nightmare.
