Why you should register the 'sucks' version of your domain

Why you should register the 'sucks' version of your domain, or not, since the traffic surging to http://www.ciaomybella.com is probably way beyond their best ever marketing strategy. ;)

The general run of the story is that somebody had a falling out with someone else and it goes downhill from there.

Read for yourself if you have a spare few hours:
    http://www.ciaomybellasucks.com/

Fabulous viral marketing technique, however. Brilliant! Even if it was unintentional(?)

registering a sux version of a website (not your own) is a very good way to get sued.

I'd encourage other people to register "sucks" versions of your domain name. Especially if they take the opportunity to link back to you :p. I had a customer upset about his order one time, and he said his recourse would be to blog about it. I replied back that I hope he includes a link back to the site so people could visit us :)

    www.halo2sucks.com

A site dedicated to fans outraged at the watering down of halo's combat system in halo 2, which, proportedly, is meant to help level the playing field and let the 12 years olds playing an M rated game have a chance at winning, without having to aim. :D

Bungie Studios has not yet taken action against the site.

    1) nobody gets sued using the sucks version of domains.... unless its for profit.

    2) if someone registers the sucks version of your domain its only giving you more press.... I am a believer in any press is good press.

just based on my feelings/experiences with the matter

Go to the UDRP site icann.org/cgi-bin/udrp/udrp.cgi?q=sucks to see list of disputes...where most of the names were transfered to the complainant.
    Including:
    walmartcanadasucks.com
    freeservesucks.com
    guinness-beer-really-really-sucks.com
    lockheedsucks.com
    autotradersucks.com
    authorizenetsucks.com

hunterholdensux.com (sucks?) was sued (and lost). Was it for profit? I don't really know, but you can look up the details of the case at smh.com.au if you are interested. I have also heard rumours that one or two other sux.com websites are going to be getting some scrutiny soon. You are playing with fire and you'd want to be pretty sure of your ground.

You are right. I checked the cases listed at icann.org/cgi-bin/udrp/udrp.cgi?q=sucks and while none involved sites that generated revenue all wins-for-the-complainant included evidence that the domain name holder intended to profit by selling the name on ebay/sedo type sites or by selling to the complainant.

This was a good wake up call. I registered mine to lock it up. I'm going to suggest my company do the same.

A while ago we had a guy start s sucks site about one of my domins. We fought long and hard but freedom of speach won out. So we ran with it and got all the negative attention we could. In turn it was a good thing by making us better known in the industry. You cant please everyone. This was in Florida in 1999 so I don't know if the law has changed since then or if it is a state by state case.

I can't find any UDRP decisions regarding nextel. Must have tried other legal action.

Registering your own suck domain won`t help you from guys who are really that mad with you. if you get your own sucks.com domains, they will have plenty of other options like .org, .net hyphenated.

Stopping negative energy is really difficult. But if sucks domain is getting you press, I will offer them free hosting of my own... ;)

Fully agree -- All publicity is good publicity.
