Why you should Believe in God - Especially for Atheists!

OK, I have been giving similar example to people who don't believe there is God. But later, I came to know that there is something called Pascal's Wager, which explains my point in better way.

So, I am copying that for my atheist friends. I don't remember many but I guess eXe is one of them.

By the way, I am not preaching/calling you to any specific religion .. which religion is better, thats another thing. I am just trying to convince you that why you should believe in God.

    What is Pascal's Wager:

Pascal's Wager (or Pascal's Gambit) is the application by the French philosopher Blaise Pascal of decision theory to the belief in God.

    Explanation:

In his Wager, Pascal attempts to provide an analytical process for a person to evaluate options in regarding belief in God. This is often misinterpreted as simply believing in God or not. As Pascal sets it out, the options are two: live as if God exists, or live as if God does not exist. There is no third possibility.

Therefore, we are faced with the following possibilities:

    * You live as though God exists.

o If God exists, you go to heaven: your gain is infinite.

o If God does not exist, you gain nothing & lose nothing.

    * You live as though God does not exist.

o If God exists, you go to hell: your loss is infinite.

o If God does not exist, you gain nothing & lose nothing.

    .....And ?
If this is supposed to convince people into believing in God, then you failed by doing so.
This way of thinking is purely stupid, aswell.

    My Wager:
Two options. Live as if <insert any wild creation you can come up with here> exists, or live as <same> does not exist.
Let's say my creation for this matter is named Xenu, the evil alien from Scientology.

    * You live as though Xenu exists.

o If Xenu exists, you <insert anything that can occur beneficial>.

o If Xenu does not exist, you gain nothing & lose nothing.

    * You live as though Xenu does not exist.

o If Xenu exists, you <insert anything that can occur as a big loss>.

o If Xenu does not exist, you gain nothing & lose nothing.

Replace Xenu with anything, and there you have it. Stupidity.

and you should calculate the probability of Infinite Gain and Infinite Loss, in both God Exists and God doesn't Exists ways of life.

Because there MIGHT be a chance you'll go to hell for all eternity if you don't.
Same as that you should believe in Lord Xenu or you'll MIGHT go to alien prison for eternity if you don't.

You have a point, but Xenu or its existence is not as disputed and controversial as of God's.

Currently, ~3.5 billion people including Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews and others believe in God in one or another form. Whereas 1.1 billion are atheists.

This 3.5 billion + 1.1 billion people's conflict about God's existence and non-existence is the largest conflict on the earth about any supernatural power.
Whereas, only one people believes on your Xenu, which is you .. and it doesn't make it worth attention.

I might consider your wager if you have at least 1.5 billion people approving your Xenu, which is less than half of the people approving God.

On the other hand, by approving Xenu .. you indirectly approved God. The one and only supernatural power of universe.

    You call it Xenu.

    Muslims call it Allah.

    Christians call is God.

    Hindus call it Bhagwan.

What name it should be given, based on what religion you are on .. thats another topic.

At the moment, we want to discuss If there is some supernatural power (whatever you call it, Xenu or God or Allah), who created us, monitoring us etc. or not.

Which i find utterly silly, because you go with the logic of 'go with the flow', the logic that says 'if everyone jumps out of the window, so will i'.
If i create a religion, convince people to believe in Xenu or whatever other name i come up with, and raise my follower's to billions - then you'd have the same wager here.
    It's silly.

'Everyone says if i don't believe in God i'll go to hell' - 'So i'll believe in God for the sake of it... for the most part, there is no God and nothing will happen to me'.
That is a thought of an uneducated villager from hundreds and thousands of years ago.
Fortunately, we've had quite a progress from these days.

Alright, so lets go from the point of thought.
There is a huge difference, don't you think ? Between God, Allah, Xenu and Bhagwan.
Each of these names are incorporated in different religions - each of these religions has different rules and guidances.
In Christianity you go to Hell.
In other religions Hell might not even exist.
In 'Mypersonalreligionthaticreated' if you don't believe in the almighty creator - after you die, you go to a place similar to Hawaii. Would you compare Hell to a place similar to Hawaii ?
Each religion and it's own perks. You can't generalize Allah, God, Xenu and all others as only names.

That's just nonsense. You lose pork, foreskin, anything that has yeast in it (albeit only for one week a year), crabs, your Saturday job, right to steal...

Or are we talking about believing in God without actually following his commandments? Then you don't gain anything even if God does exist

If 3.5 billion people are jumping out of window..

    and

Probability of Infinite Gain is Infinite..

    and

jumping out of window doesn't hurt

I'd prefer jumping out, especially because of last reason.

Well, yeah. This sounds an uneducated and villagers' thought. But not every old, uneducated, villagers thought is false.

Like invention wheel is considered to be biggest (ancient) invention of mankind, its very old and must came from uneducated, villager people.

The cute part is, no one of these 3.5 billion people knows for sure what's gonna happen after they die. So the probability is 50/50 then. Maybe you were right, and you'll die and go to heaven/hell/alien prison - or maybe you were wrong and you'll just die like a moron.
When i said jumping out of the window, i meant, jumping out of 100 story high window, that kind of style ;) You will most probably die, i think.

You are right, Probability with religious people is 50/50. Mean, they have 50% chances of going to heaven after death by the God who punishes on the base of belief and disbelief.

But what about atheists? They have 0% chances of going to heaven. God exists or no, they are in loss either way.

    Which is better?

Believing in God doesn't hurt but jumping out of 100 story window does hurt, so this window example doesn't fit.

The only example for 'go with the flow' fits here which have same results as of believing in God, like it must have:

    * Gain for doing it.
    * Loss for not doing it.
    * And doing it doesn't hurt.

ps. this example will perfectly fit, it you make the window 1 ft. high ;)

You don't believe in the almighty creator from my 'somemadeup' religion ? Then you have 0% chance of going to a <insert some very lucrative place here>. Xenu (for this example) exists or not, you are in loss either way.

So, which one do you think is better, believing in Xenu or NOT believing in Xenu ? ;)

Anyone could ask you these questions. Would these questions turn you to believe in other Gods ? Does my mirror-question to your question made you think twice about believing in Xenu ?

Again i repeat, this type of thinking is plain silly.

If you live as though he DOES exist, and he doesn't, think about all the wasted sunday mornings...

Think about all the premarital sex you could have had...

And most of all, the time wasted arguing that he does exist, trying to convince others to blindly follow... All the while, you've been wrong...

PS, I'm not saying I don't believe, just that this is not a good reason to start worshiping any deity...

Our effort and money will have much greater effect if we put it into researching transhuman technology than just praying and hoping.

Humans can create a Heaven with technology, we need no God.

The thing is, if you believe in God, you have to do so wholeheartedly. You cannot believe in god as a safe ooption of the two because In God's view you are not doing it with true belief but mereley taking a 50-50 chnace in order to get the good life after death in the peobabilty that it exists. That my friend, is not belief but a cowardice way of looking at this thing.

About a year and a half ago I thought God was a farce... But for about a solid month I did some serious thinking and researching...

The reasons I believe in God..

How was space/matter created? From nothingness there was something?
And...thanks for this gift of life and the ability to breathe... Even though life is short, it´s nice to be alive - isn´t it? So who can I thank for this? Life shouldn´t be seen as a priviledge - life is a gift.

I have another one I have been pondering...What is time and how does it come to exist?
