Different crawlers prefers different sitemaps, Yahoo prefers .TXT sitemap while Google asks for .XML sitemap
Similarly, MSN has a different choice. you won't get much benefit if you are going to submit HTML sitemap to Google
because HTML sitemap is not the one which Google asks for. adding an XML sitemap will ensure discovery of all of your sites pages

Its not about the best choice its about the format in which search engine(s) understand the sitemap.

Why are you (and the rest of the people who responded) under the impression that an XML Sitemap is better for any of the search bots?

An HTML site map is just fine for all bots and humans too! Only those who support the Sitemaps protocol will be able to read your Sitemap.

Even Matt Cutts says to have both but if you are pressed for time, do the HTML site map first.

Create a HTML sitemap for humans (and crawlers) and XML sitemap for crawlers. Your HTML sitemap can pass on link juice which may be useful in some cases :)

I agree, you may use the general template for the html sitemap, and generate the xml with sitemapGenerator.jnlp.

Google uses more than the sitemap.xml to index your site, othe companies use other types of website sitemaps, Don't just limit yourself to one.

In the "Old days" you had to add a url to Google manually, the advantage of the latest version of xml, is that all of the information that Google needs to completely index a website is available. Modified pages, new additions, images etc. So in many ways Google is doing the work for you. All you have to do is tell Google about your sitemap and request a visit.

I have put some info together on website sitemaps if you would like a bit more info.

HTML site-maps are easy to understand for humans and xml is easy to understand for Google Bot.
