Why would a site be deleted from DMOZ?

So why would a site be deleted from DMOZ?

One of my sites was accepted there pretty much as soon as it was on the web, all unique content, etc. It got taken down about a month or so ago, nothing has changed really, i've added content to the site, no bad content or anything like that. I don't really understand it.

If anyone knows of any reason why a site would be taken down, it'd be great to hear :)

    Thanks,
    TS

    Hello twistedspikes.

I can give you only a general explanation, but one of the following will almost certainly apply:
    • an editor or an automated link checker has found the site to be unavailable at some stage, and has moved it out of the live directory for re-evaluation
    • an editor has moved the site to a more specific or appropriate category where it may be awaiting review by another volunteer
    • the site does not meet the criteria for listing

If you have not already done so, you are of course welcome to suggest your site once, to the correct category, where it will be reviewed by a volunteer in due course. :)

    Hi,

    Thank you for the reply.

Well the site has only ever been unavalable for about 1 hour (due to a hosting problem), so unless it was viewed then by an editor then it won't be that.
I doubt it was moved to another category (it was in the most appropriate for it's type).
It does meet the conditions (up to date, unique content, etc).
I have submitted it once (after it was removed, about a month or so ago), nothing so far.

    Thanks crowbar *blush*.

twistedspikes, thank you for considering the possible explanations I provided. Your concern is understandable, and you have now done all you can to remedy the situation. :)

I supose it's not that big a deal anyway, the site is still doing pretty well as it is.

Dmoz has a pretty few sites without even IP assigned to them.
    see: http://www.we-globe.net/WebLab/Dmoz/DeadDomains.html
So it is not a case.

Some people become editors to promote their sites, but not only.
A few ones delete competetors from list.
Your site, I've checked it, seemingly enters a highly competitive area.

On the other hand, DMOZ is free, but not truely open. It has amount of power, and as all powers it need to be controlled by elite group.

Interesting link, thanks for sharing. Although it says updated 26/May when I look at it, its out dated in a lot of cases. Many of the displayed links are not in DMOZ and were removed weeks ago. I was able to take care of a few, saving a couple that were simple human errors.

Everyone is very welcome to help with quality control in the ODP, whether or not they are editors.
So, there are a couple of ways for non-editors to alert volunteers to problems which may have been overlooked or not yet discovered by the automated link checking programmes:
    1. Use the Update URL link at the top right of the category page where the link is listed. There are instructions on the form for how to report the problem.
    2. Provide the information in the appropriate thread in the Quality Control forum at Resource-Zone.
    Thank you for helping. :)

Have they started being nice to webmasters there yet? Last time I went they had a rather strong dislike for anyone other then editors.

Here is a place that'll also get the job done: DMOZ - Report Bad Links

Though, heh, DO NOT BOTHER bringing it up here. I can go on and on and on about a problem and editors will deny it (with out even checking in some cases). So it can be rather difficult for those that see the behavior of editors even try to care enough to help... It is sad that there is no "official" place to bring things up though...

Of course not all editors are that way. You being one of them makrhod...

Editors also have many different tasks to choose from, and as we never have enough time to do them all, we have to prioritize them according to what our interests are.

I'm mentoring one editor, playing my wow game, editing two wow categories, two water garden cats, editing everything within the US, and now we're getting hammered by a robo run, our automated QC tool.

    I'd prefer to play wow.;)

I'm also running a full time business 6 days a week, so my free time is pretty filled up.

Surely if there was then it'd just get full of people complaining that they can't get their site listed?

Yeah maybe, but then, there would likely be a lot less confusion about many other things which would open up plenty of free time (and post counts) to give the replies of "ur site iz teh su><0rz"

The only official thing from DMOZ other then it's listing, is it's blog, and from it's last entry, it's really laughable and questionably unofficial. It *needs* customer support on some level, for the submiter, end user, and even the webmaster (as they all often cross over).

Q, have to agree with you...this is not a blog, but something else.

But would like also to remind you that ODP is not a listing service. Hope that you will catch this soon :p
