Why WebAtlas got screwed.....

Just in case anyone has noticed - a pretty big web directory recently got removed from the Google index.....

My thought to why are title abilities in submission.....

There is no logical reason, as far as the se's are concerned. to give a user the ability to select their own spammy filled titles.....

    Is there?

It's banned for quite some time now..
at v7n there is a huge thread devoted to this site:
    www.v7n.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16664&highlight=webatlas

I also noticed that bluefind isn't in google's cache anymore, but it still has pagerank..

    I've been watching Bluefind also....

It's scoring only a 3 out of 5 on my directory list

Two or Three months ago, it would have been a 5

I think there the next to go, completely...... But if so - I don't understand why it's still there, so it's got a 50-50 shot.... If I was them, I'd make a point to add something more informational to each individual page.....

maybe they are working on this now.

    It does still have PR.....

Definetly took some kind of direct hit...

hmmmm, John Scott has pushed it extreamly far and with such success he created sevenseek and sold Bluefind.... Guess he got out while the gettin was good....

I've got my eyes on these directories...... Who knows what's going to happen....

    But what do I know? - I'm just a peon :D

I read some of that thread. What a bunch of whack jobs over there. Thank goodness DP does not attract that kind of nuttyness.

As a side note, it looks like my blog is suffering the same fate (No descriptions on results, and PR is still there for the site...)

    All a little odd really.

    clasione, nice directory list.
I checked a few big directories and compared them with the data on your site, they all dropped in backlinks.

maby the directory days are really over now..
I agree that more information to the pages would improve the directories.

you have made this same post in multiple forums.

-why do people use keyword rich links? because the keywords are descriptive.

-what kind of links do the seach engines recommend using? descriptive.

are you telling me that your directory does not have any keyword rich anchor links? I bet it does...

anything that WebAtlas did wrong there were lots of other directories doing way worse.

if your directory gets temporarily deindexed how would you like posts like this about your directory?

there were other things that were way worse than any of the anchor text and the biggest problem was probably the 302 redirect.

As a matter of fact, the last time I listed a title anchor was for you.....

I usually don't let people choose their anchor - it creates too much freedom - I , as the administrator choose the title based on the url and the theme......

Having a form field for the anchor is asking for it......

    In my opinion ofcourse....

    ------

And I spoke of this in one other forum - I think it was UTN....
Shoot me in the head, and let me die now.....

I think directories will be an pretty non existant, pretty rash statement I know, but the only reason why so many have appeared lately is because people have thought they could make money out of them with webmasters queing up to pay for a submission to a directory with fairly high PR.

Bluefind, and Webatlas were the best directories out there, but without good PR and traffic they are pretty useless, along with the majority of other directories. If DMOZ had not being affiliated with the Google directory, it would be on it's feet now.
