Why waste time submitting to a paid directory...

    I have several paid directories.
To get a listing, it costs.
To get a featured listing, it costs.
Only way to get a free listing is to reciprocate.

So why do so many submit a site, never pay or reciprocate?
Do they think that a directory owner will not check for payment or reciprocal link?

How many other directory owners have the same, submissions with no payment or reciprocal link?

Because your form allows them to?

Once they submit, instead of paying at paypal, they just shut down the page.

But yes, it does fit a few people! LOL

Believe it is people who can not really read the terms, or I am checking now to see if it could be auto submitters.

Now to move on, dumping a blog (damn, but I just had it coming up with new content each and every day of my life for that blog!).
Make the domain either a directory or use another domain for a new directory.
Have to put the paid phpld version somewhere, plus the paid template.
Hate to waste money by having them sit on my computer.

Well....I have a theory....webmasters hire some people to submit for them (not speaking about the specialized submission services here). They hand them a list to submit to. They just go and submit. They most often don't know what they are doing or why they are doing it, or how directories function, they were just hired for some very low rate and they do what was asked. No thinking involved.
Second theory, your directories were free in the past, and they are still on some free directories list, and people think it's OK to submit for free when it's on free directory list (that never gets updated)

There are some directories who like to spring suprises on the submitters, of course not the directories your talking of, but you will all know what i mean, those directories that have no conditions stated anywhere, then you reach the end of your submission and they present you with the suprise charge.

I can see it from both sides myself, i plan to become a directory owner myself in the future and would find the non payments frustrating myself, and of course as a submitter myself i dislike those sudden suprises of a charge that there was no mention of previously during the submission.

I guess we can all improve on reading things properly and also not trying to pull a fast one on others.

If you're going to ask for a recip, the script should at least check the page they tell you the recip is on, for that link. You don't want to be doing that manually.

I think a lot of submitters will not bother to read the guidelines, and submit thinking "It's worth a try, nothing to lose and I might get a listing". The best you can do is automate your rejection process, so you're not bothered by these careless submissions.

I don't demand recips, so I don't reject automatically based on that. What I was thinking of is automatically rejecting a listing in the same way that you would alert a submitter that the form is filled out wrongly. So they have to go back and fill in the recip field with a valid page before their site gets put in your review queue.

The directory might be included in a free directory list somewhere. Many directories start out free, then switch to paid. There has to be a lag as to when the referring sites get them in the right category.

Some directory owners post grand-opening specials in forums, "I know it says pay, but just submit and you will get in free for the first thirty days." So, the first thirty days never end, eh?

I have the same problem, it says $5 to submit, but they still fill out all the info and they send it in anyway. I get about 2-3 people like this per-day.
