In another thread (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=238852) someone suggested that using the character | was preferable to - in page titles. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? - like is there any merit in this suggestion, and why?
Don't use either...... Using sybols in your title is a bad idea. Also make sure your titles are descriptive with the keywords first. 65 char. max. Good to go.............
think theres no prob using this char |, lot of site have good ranks even they have this character. its all about seo process on how you handle site. IMO
Why do you say that, i personally like the pipe. I have experimented with - , | , and : I have found there is no difference. KEYWORDS, now that is major. Don't stuff either.
i use | rather than a - in most cases because i see a | as like a break. keyword 1 | (break) Keyword 2 | (Break) etc whereas i see a - as a plus keyword 1 - (plus) Keyword 2 - (plus) etc i generally use a - when using site name in title too site.com - keyword 1 etc
I guess the point I was trying to make is that it is a useless character. Most people place all sorts of crap in their title. I'll use - at the end of my titles if I place my URL after the text but I think that it isn't something that will throw your SEO off whack. If you looked at most fortune 500 companies you will see they always use the keyword first and have a descriptive title. And very few of them use charaters outside of the alphabet. When in doubt mimic someone who spends thousands on their site every month.
The pipe | is getting more attention lately because Rand Fishkin wrote about it on SEOmoz. No one has reported any credible problems with the pipe and nobody from the search engines has either endorsed or condemned it. (Unlike the dash - and underscore _ which Matt Cutts addressed specifically.)
