    Pinging is basically a way of notifying the search engines (hence, the internet community) that you have written or posted something new to your website or blog page. Instead of waiting for days for the search engine “spider” to come and “crawl” your site, you will let the search engine know that he needs to send the “spider” right away and “crawl” your new content. Another thing that pinging does is creates backlinks for you and this is a great because you can build a lot of them in a very short amount of time.But too much pinging can harm to sites,it may slow down your site or site being flagged as spam.

    I have never heard that pinging itself creates a backlink, can you explain?

    Typically you ping a search engine server directly from your server, so there is no backlink created. Sometimes people will ping a search engine with a page they just created a new backlink on so the search engine can find the backlink quicker, but I am unaware of how the actual process of pinging can create a backlink.

    Pinging is just to let the search engine aware about your move with your site and it helps to get indexed quickly. Specially for low quality backlinks. But pinging itself does not create a backlink.

    Its good for indexing but do not use it if you want to build up your sites authority. Quite frankly, I have always found it to be similar to link exchange. I think I have a blog with a ping but only towards the comments section of one of my posts.
