    Because the code is <img src="" />. Can you write here the code of index.php or archive.php?

    Create a new custom field knows as Thumbnail or post_thumbnail ( depends on the theme you are using, so try with both :)
    Upload the image you want to use as the thumbnail on your own site, and then paste it's link in the box named as value.
    That should be it.
