Why there is decrease in Traffic regardless of increase in site ranking

I have got an Amsterdam travel related site. Earlier when it was at comparatively low rank at google.com I was getting sufficient visitors. But as the place and rank is increasing (now appearing in top five) in main key words related to amsterdam hotels, the numbers of visitors have drastically been decreasing. Although the design, links, content (inner page increased) of the site is the same as it was earlier. Can anyone help me to search out the problem with the site ?

Find out where your visitors were coming from when you had decent traffic and you'll find an answer.

check webmaster tools if you have sitelinks, if you do users might use these to get to your inncer pages instead of going to your homepage first

Because rank doesn't necessarily have to do with how much traffic you are getting.

Analyse your visitor through google analytics. It will help out the reason.

Each position in search engine results has its search share. Might be the earlier position of your website did have a good share of search than the new position.

Might have something to do with the MayDay algorithm change where thinner, less content rich sites are having a harder time rank for longtail kw phrases. Even if your main phrases are ranking better, your longer ones that were converting may not be.

Maybe there is a high and low season to travel to Amsterdam, maybe there were a few big conventions . Sooo many different explanation outside of your site could have affected as well.

Top placement in search engines does not always mean you'll get traffic. Many factors determine traffic, not the least of which is keyword competitiveness ... and is anyone even searching for your keyword in the first place. How many searches are performed for your keyword daily?
