Why the preference for Paypal on DP?

I have been on DP for only a short while but find it to be an amazing source for all things web.

So when I started buying products on this site, I was told that paypal was the best option.
I had never had a paypal account and was very uncomfortable about providing it my personal and financial details, as there has been some very bad press about the security of personal info on line.

However, after trying to send payments for some sites via Western Union at very bad rates, I gave in and payed by my credit card in response to invoices from sellers using paypal.

After a few of these payments however, the paypal started to insist that I add my bank account details in addition to my Master Card, "for my security"!

Not only that, I was told that I would have to also sign a direct debit agreement with paypal!

    This is preposterous!

I have been in business for a long while and it has been our policy never to set up a direct debit account for any thing.

We believe in up front payments for every thing, even if that means that we pay well in advance for any goods and services.

All I wanted to do, was to make some small payments using my credit card.

I can understand it if a company places a limit on the amount of funds that can be transacted during an agreed period of time, or even if it asks for a deposit from us as a security against a perceived risk. (although that is why one is using a credit card!).

It can not however ask us for unreasonable disclosure of private info and for things like a direct debit agreement.

In the mean time, one of the sellers persuaded me to pay via Google Checkout service yet another online service.

That transaction was without any problems and it was FREE of cost.

    So here is my question.

Why is it that most sellers want us to pay via paypal on DP?

    Why not Google Checkout?

    Ken

PayPal is widely used, so most DP users use it. You may try other services like ikobo, moneybookers, 2Checkout etc.

PayPal is popular and is trusted worldwide with SSL protection, all you need to worry about is phishing, just check the url bar to see where you are going is really the paypal site.

Sure but the question is that in a forum like this, which is one of the most informed techie forums out there why is it that no one is even considering the FREE option from Google checkout?

Surely google is equally if not better known!

That is what I hear all the time about Microsoft V Open source!

Google has started the service to address the problems that are there with paypal and which every one puts up with because "it is the only site we trust".

I also did not know of Google checkout and it was HITBOY, one of the sellers on this forum who persuaded me to use it to buy the site from him.

I found the google checkout to so ggod and the paypal service to be so bad that I am spending all this time to tell others on the forum about it.

I must say that I never thought that really sharp tecies like you guys would not know what is new and what is great out there at this time.

The problem is that even if we know, most wont switch, unless it was compatible with paypal. what i mean is, maybe if it could except paypal payments or send payments to others paypal accunts.

What do you mean by they will not switch?

It is not an either/or situation.

We can use more than one service, unless paypal insists that we do not deal with any other company.

If your client wants to use google to send you money then he should be able to do it.

all it takes is 5 minutes to set the thing up.

Just to make it easy for you here is the link to go to:

    https://checkout.google.com/sell/

You would think that I owned a lot of shares in Google, the way I am promoting Google checkout :)

    I wish!

It is just that I do not like monopolies trying to screw their clients, who have no way of any kind of redress.

Besides a better service which is totally free.

    What is not to like?

Hope you will pass this along.

    All the best
