Why spammers try submitting to directories knowing their links will not get approved?

I agree with deluxdon some people are trying their luck,
where as in most cases this is all because of automated software.

They just use the auto submission software, they dont even want to sort the directory, just auto submit it to all the directory

As other said, this is because of automated software. In my experience it is best to block email addresses, since these people usually always use the same email address (usually a fake one).

They do it because they've found an apparent flaw in the systematics of a script, and will continue to keep at it as it will not ever get fixed, because when it comes to free scripts, all they are is a bait and switch tactic(which is of course fine if there was a real fix), with the hopes of providing something inferior to force you to 'purchase' with claims of fixes, which are obviously a lie and do not exist.

After adding ReCaptcha to my directories spam was reduced by *at least* 80%. It's a nice front-line defence.

A lot of bad submissions are manual submits though, that's the real problem. Most people just don't know how to submit to directories.

It's for the same reason like a DOS attack, stuff so many links in a directory that genuine links get deep down the list.
Most of the submissions are by bots - so it really doesn't matter if they fail or succeed!
