I still get a lot of spam on the couple of word press blog I run, but I find it a bit strange that spammers still try to do this, even though word press has added no follow attributes to all the links.

i heard that yahoo don't care about no-follow. And with or without no-follow, your visitors can click that link.

I'm not sure either, I got a lot of spam also but I disabled comments all together because I was tired of it. Maby they just spam it for the sake of destruction.

Most spammers never go to the site. They use software that spams blogs and forums. They do not see that sites has no follow tags and yes they get a few hits from posts but not worth it in my mind.

Agreed, however the no follow tag has been implemented since the release of wordpress 2.1, so any blog running 2.1 or higher presents absolutely zero link value in google, much like wikipedia.

Do other search engines regard the no-follow attribute asides from Google?

    What about Yahoo!?
    What about MSN?

I believe they keep on spamming because... well... it works. :)

These programs spam a huge amount of blogs at a time. THink if they are spamming 1000 blogs a day and they get 1 click from each link. I click from a blog is a pretty low guestimate, thats 1k visitors a day easy.

1 click from each link seems far fetched to me since quite a few webmasters would moderate the comments before it is posted on their blog/site or use anti spam measures to stop spammers.

But yes you are right they do this because they get traffic out of it, I guess the people to blame for this are the bloggers/webmasters who cant keep their blogs/sites clean and in a way encourage this kind of activity.

And also the ppl who click those spammy links are to be blamed equally.
This certainly gives those spammers some traffic and high encouragement.

If everyone was just running Akismet, it would make it so much easier. If you haven't already enabled it, do so. The site I write for (in sig), gets between 200 and 500 spam comments a day, almost all of which are caught by Akismet.

Yeah Akismet is awesome. I used to approve all the comments before they appeared on my blog until I discovered Akismet - not I don't have to approve at all.. all spam is caught 100%!

Comment spam on the blog is an indicate how hot is your blog. In my blog I can see that when ever that your blog has backlink from other site or search engine then spammer will come to your blog.

However, Akismet is the best to stop spam :)

No doubt Akismet if great, I have it enabled on both my blogs and rarely if any spam makes it through. And if it does manages to get past Akismet, I usually delete it in few hours time at the most.
