    Still, a person should be working on back-up ways to get traffic to a site that do not rely on SEO as the central pivot for your marketing. Use viral marketing, offline marketing, social media and backlinking for the sake of backlinking (if you have a relevant backlink from Wikipedia, it's a good link even if it's no follow), etc. So long as it's good targeted traffic, that's what matters.

    I tend to think of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) as the arrangement of goods in a store in the proper aisles, and customers as traffic, no point having a store without customers and vice-versa

    Its like standing different from the crowd, though onsite SEO is not the only factor affecting the rankings today but even then its exactly like making yourself look good in the crowd. SEO is making your site more beautiful, more useful, more readable, more accessible to make it stand out of the crowd to eventually serve the purpose for which you have created your website :)
