Everything is this online game will be (PAY FIRST THAN GET WHAT YOU WANT), it is too risk for SEO provider to start providing their service before they get pay since the buyer can not be pay after the service is done and as a buyer you can ask refund if the seller not give the result in their service.

Because very few people will pay after they got the results, and the results can not be reversed easily. Will you work form me in advance???? ask your self, you will get the answer.......

That is the case with all services not just SEO . Why would a professional work in advance for free ? . Also unlike other services an SEO cant guarantee you any search listing positions simply because he does not own google ! If he makes 2 high quality backlinks and your competitors SEO makes 3 then you lose the position does that mean he should not accept payment for the work done ? SEO is a rat race and results cant be guaranteed , only work can be guaranteed and thee professional gets paid for the amount and quality of work that he does and clients can be cruel sometimes by not paying up if their site does not get the desired rankings .

some services will actually offer a trial and others will give a money back guarantee; but the simple answer to your question is because most are in it for one thing...to make money - not to say that they don't care about the progress of your site: of course they do, they want to retain you. but its money, all money. EVERYONE wants to get paid! lol

Because they do all the work to bring your site to a top position and if you do not pay them after your job is done then cannot reverse their work that is all the link building and promotion that they do for your website can not be taken back. So they do the work for you only on payment.

There are a lot of fees to cover before you even start appearing as SERPs. You gotta do some press releases and if you want quality press releases you will most definitely have to pay. Just keep in mind that anything is cheap or free will give you cheap results. You can't expect to get high ranked and make a lot of money without spending a dollar.

Another expense is creating links. As we all know links is what is most important for SEO. Links don't come cheap, once again you could find inexpensive links but it will take a huge amount of links to get you high ranked. 100 links from small not known website's isn't worth the same as 1 link from a high PR well known and respected website. In order to get those links you will have to buy them.

In other words, SEO firms needs some kind of money in advance to even start doing some work on your SEO campaign.

*note: Be very careful of which SEO firm you choose to take services with because most of them out there don't have a clue of what they're doing, but they'll gladly take your money and tell you that they'll make your dreams come true and generate you huge amounts of traffic for you to transform into sales. If you get an SEO contract for anything less than 500$/month, don't go for it. Through personal experience, usually SEO firms that take anything lower than 500$/month won;t give you the results you're looking to get. Look for online reviews or if they have a solid portfolio to back them up. Ask them for references of previous customers that you can consult and ask them how they're campaign went.

Hope I helped you out a bit, if you have any further questions, ask away :)

I agree wholeheartedly...You really need to be careful of SEO companies that offer free trials as well, they may rank you really fast for a non competitive keyword, but as far as targeting keywords that will get you results, there is a lot work involved.

Exactly, couldn't have said it better myself. They will approach you telling you that you will be ranked for a few keywords but if you actually do a keyword research on those keywords, you will find that their monthly searches are very poor. Optimization of those keywords is done mostly through on-page optimization and requires a very little amount of work and time.

No link building campaign, press releases, blog commenting, article writing, etc. is necessary for these sorts of campaign.

IMO it's much better to do the work yourself. You'll see the same results pretty much if you do it right, and you won't have to pay out the rear for it.

If you are afraid you may not get paid or not truly feeling comfortable with a customer you can always use the 301 insurance and its easy to pull when your customer jams out on you.

Have you ever done 30 hours of work and then gotten stiffed on the bill? It truly sucks.

After meeting with a customer to understand their wants/needs/desires, I offer a paid in advance research session to focus in on the most valuable keyword phrases, then we begin a 6 month program... they pay as they go. They pay on the 1st of the month, that month's marketing gets done.... They don't pay, nothing gets done.

If you went to buy a new TV, do you take the TV home and set it up first, or do you pay first?

If you went to the movies, do you watch the movie first and then pay, or pay and then watch the movie?

Can't be said any better, I agree with you . SEO is a profit making business and so is the clients site . Its not an NGO . If the client wants to make profit from his online business and yet expect the SEO to give away his services for free till they see results it is like asking an investment broker to give profits first then they will give the investment money ! Its like asking a person to give you 150 $ first then you will give him 100 $ for his work and if he fails to deliver then you will not pay ?

Honestly, the real SEO service is not cheap. Even for the consultation, the real expert SEO charge you hundreds/hours.
Do you think SEO is easy? Link building is easy, SEO doesn't. :D

There are actually sites where the money for the work is put in to escrow and is released when both parties agree the work is complete. vWorker.com is a good example.
