OK, this is probably a really dumb question, but I see this often on here and wonder why... Someone posts that they have a new directory they have developed and are looking for submissions. No problem - that is one of the reasons this forum is here. But why do we need a "I submitted. Thanks" posting? I guess I don't see what the possible purpose could be for this. It seems to clutter the board up like crazy.
There once was a time when manners mattered. You know, things like saying thank you and you're welcome.
noppid, I agree. I guess I don't see such manners exhibited elsewhere on this forum, so I was wondering whether there was some other reason. (and yfs1, the directories forum is the reason I am here)
I don't know about others, but I usually like to let the person know his or her efforts are appreciated and to wish the person good luck with the new directory.
It doesn't clutter the forums really, only the thread. But since the thread was a mere announcement anyway it doesn't matter in that regard. So yeah, it's just a form of politeness and also a way for others to gauge how popular that directory is amongst the DP crowd. I often skip those threads since I don;t do the directory submissions myself but if I see one with lots of replies I deduce it must be a nice one, worth a look.
Part of the reason I post is so I remember that I've added my sites to that directory for the next time I visit the forum .
Simple thank you & to let them know it was you that submitted - it can on occasion expedite your approval process too.
Not to mention Shawn would have to add 10 new moderators to keep up with a no reply rule to directory announcements The answer may be to create a Other Directory Subforum so that those that are here for discussion on DMOZ, Yahoo, MSN and other major directories don't need to wade through the announcements. (Or can unsubscribe)
Great minds think alike! I just sent that suggestion to TOPS30 and he said I should put it on the Suggestions forum, which is what I just did. Please add your support! Thanks.
You might as well add a poll to it so you can judge the amount of interest I actually think its a great idea if its just a subforum (Doesn't take up more room)
I was actually wondering the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I am not bothered in any way by the replies, actually saying thanks is not bad at all, and some guys that I know are good ones do make 'thank you' posts. Still, alucard has good point there. I don't think it's always just good manners, sometimes it's a little more, a little promotion, another light link, who knows what. Anyway, it doesn't hurt at all to say thanks and bump up the thread, I never do it, but I don't feel bad because of that, if others do I am not bothered at all. If it's all within reasonable limits, of course. But if most of you consider submitting without thanks as being bad mannered I might as well start thanking directory owners, why not.
The biggest way to say thanks is a recip if you can provide one. My comment on saying thanks was not to say not sayig thanks was bad. But I do think it's bad to knock folks for saying thanks. If you want to complain, there is alot of garbage posted we could actully live without if you look around.
I wasn't complaining - I was trying to understand. I think that maybe coming out of it we can make things better for everyone, which is a Good Thing.
i belive that some of the people honestly are grateful that a directory is provided for them to submit their sites to, but i feel that most are probably just looking to increase their post count. to those that do have manners, keep it up, sometimes it acts like a plague and all become infested with it.
It looks like that quote was taken from my responses to people when I submitted to their directories (i did a few all in an afternoon) There were 2 reasons really.......... 1/ simply being polite 2/ if they saw my link was through the forum there is a vague hope they may do it sooner. I hope this helps
I'm glad the question was asked...I wondered too. I had assumed it was to get the individuals "post count" up. (Don't you get some benefits the more posts you have or something?) Anyway, I do find it useful as a guage as to how worthwhile or well-run a new directory appears to other members.
I do it to mostly bump the thread for them ...keeps it going and also you can see from comments what the process was like.
