People Have 100's or 1000's of domains because it is very profitable business for them..

Most of these people who have these domains have registered them long time ago. About 10% of the searches are done by direct typing in the keyword for what people are looking for instead of searching in the search engines..

For example... Lets say some one is looking for Cheap travel, so instead of going to google and typing that into the search bar they usually type in cheaptravel.com in the browser with usually a .com and it takes them to the website directly and then they can do the search for what they are looking for... Now since there are about 10% of the people on the net who do this, a lot of these people who are called domainers registered these domains with all the famous keywords in them...

    many examples..

    Like Candy.com
    Finance.com
    CheapHolidays.com etc etc...

Now some of those famous domains have been developed into full fledge websites (so anyone who owns them has the advantege and doesn't have to adverstise them much because a lot of traffic is natural type in traffic) but a lot of these domainers Park their domains with Domain Parking companies who pay the domainers for the clicks.. When people type in a domain e.g cheapxyz.com a site will appear which is a parked page and it will have ads that are provided by parking companies who use google and yahoo ad feeds... Now that person clicks on a link that he/she sees on that parking page then the owner of the domain makes a percentage of the money that click generated. Google or Yahoo pay the Parking company and that parking company pays a percentage of that revenue to the domainer/owner of the domain... So there are people who have thousands of domains and make very good money just doing that.. Some one may have 2000 domains and lets say each domain makes him/her $.75 cents a day on an average, so if you look at that it could mean $1500 for the domains owner. and People are making thousands and hundreds of thousands and even some top domainers are making millions of dollars a year doing just that... 3 top domainers who make millions are Kevin Ham, Frank Schilling and Rick Schwartz.. Kevin ham has over 300,000 domains and he makes over $70 millions a year. Frank S makes over $20 millions... So to answer your question if they are successful well I would say very much so....

How much does it cost to register 100 domains.. Well You can register them maybe under a $1000 depending on what registrar you use...

But before you register if that is what you are planning on doing I would suggest you do some research so you dont end up wasting money by registering crapy domains... I hope this helps..

Or have you heard of 'Making money out of domain parking'..? If no, that's one of the purpose they have lots of domains or they are flipping it. Put some contents + sell = cold hard cash.

register domains as possible as you can.

People think of them like buying stock (I do...). I have a little over 300 domains, and the amount of money they make from parking barely pays 1/4th of their upkeep cost...but it's worth holding onto them. Little by little, I'm finishing off mini-sites for them.

There are many people doing domain business. The first purpose of registering bunch of these domain is to earn money. + it depends on the domain extensions you register. i.e. if you register 100 .info domains it will not cost you that much but if you register 100 .com domains then you can see the difference.

I don't know, I have just collected them over the years and my account keeps growing. Sometimes I park them, other times I build a site for it.

About 2 years ago you could have any old domain, even .info's and throw something like an Ebay rss feed, affiliate datafeeds on them or just park them and you would probably make a tidy sum over a year or at least enough to cover renewal fees but that is all changed now days. Sites like that would last a few weeks and be deindexed by Google now. So if you want to own hundreds of names and make it a business then you would need to work extremely hard and develop each site into a popular website with fresh, updated and original content. The only exception is popular keyword .com's with type in traffic that don't rely on SEO.

How much capital you need depends on where you register. Hostgator / Godaddy are good companies.

For it to be successfull you obviously need good domains, and not 100's of giueaugeauigea.com domains :)

They are reselling those domains for profit and developing website on those they have great ideas for where they feel they can make more money than simply reselling.

At the beginning of the year I will probably maintain somewhere near 100 domains however by the end of the year I "trim the fat" by selling those I lost interest in and developing those I have great ideas for.

..and I have many great ideas

.com domains are solid investments if you can get your hands on generic category killer keywords (maybe a few .net or .org). You can hold, wait for buyers to flip them, or build mini sites. There's lots of ways to monetize and yes it can be very lucrative. Parking is not worth anything and you are always better off building mini sites instead of parking.

However, the majority of domains are crap and will never find an end user, so invest wisely.

Cheapest registrar is Godaddy membership which = 6.99/domain/year. Decent shared hosting =$100/year

Then you'll need tons of time to build or market the domains.... the sky is the limit if you know what you're doing but be prepared to loose some money when you first get into the industry.

You can hold a bunch of random good names and then sell them off to people.

Unless you've been a domainer for at least ten years and own single keyword domains it's unlikely you'll make much money parking. Many companies maintain a portfolio of domains related to their business for future development. Redirecting the domains opposed to parking. Please correct me if I am wrong, this has been my experience.
