Paid directories are less crowded, maybe they expect some traffic.

PR0 are usually fairly cheap and the links/page is low. As the listing is permanent they will recieve benefits if/when the directory gets a higher PR.

Or maybe they just ran out of free directories to submit to.

people buy link on PR 0 directory as future investment.
PR is only one of deciding factor, there are many others like traffic, design, repuation, reference etc.
last few updates many directories had lost their PR but still they are getting good amount of paid submissions.

It's not that you should not submit to free directories but in order to get more number of links, you need to submit to paid directories too.

and PR is not the only criteria for the directory listing. spreading your links is important and in this endeavour all types of listings - free, paid, featured, sponsored etc becomes important. advertising at free and paid directories should also be considered.

also varying your link types is important too. There are several link types - free directory links, paid directory links, links from forums, newsletter links, reciprocal links, themed links, blog links, edu links - so having a good spread in all link types is definitely important.

That's exactly right. If all your competitors submit to free directories only, and you submit to free directories + paid directories, surely that gives you an edge... Why not take advantage of all options if you have the budget :)

I agree. I'll pay a couple bucks even for new directories if it's a paid only. And, I'll pay a couple bucks for a featured link if it's a crowded free directory.

Funny thing is, never charged on my directory, but had a link for donations.

I was amazed at the amount of money I raked in from donations at lsblogs.....

    Can anyone guess how much....

    ZERO.

People just want freebies, or they will pay if there is a charge.
They wont donate though to a site that doesnt charge. They would rather give it to someone that forces them to. Weird.

That is the wrong attitude to have. A lot of directories can give you instant traffic and business due to their popularity as well as targeted search engine traffic that some of their category pages already get (where there are only 2-3 listings with 80+ visitors/day looking for your service, how can $39.99 be too much for something like that? ;) )

Do you think you can get 80+/day visitors for $39.99?
    I'm afraid I’d only get 0.8/day

so let me get this straight

you pay directories money and they will send you visitors?

is there any evidence that these users will stay? ie. retention rates?

of is this similar to advertising with google?

does this actually work? can anyone recommend a good directory that does this?

Well what's your other option? Tossing it into a search engine and hoping your site is optimized enough to get links?

Links help you in SE over a period of time. It's not JUST the PR that heps, it's getting links across several different IP's that helps.
