We lost over 27k usd in sales because of charge backs from customers stating stolen cards used at our websites. They locked my sites and auction business down twice over a year and a half. I pleaded to pay for the chargeback fees and offered proof of eu buyers from us located in usa. The first time took 3 weeks to get corrected and second time they shut us down again so we moved all our business from PP after week two. They are rough with little respect for sellers. Buyers can eat you alive. I could give you many more examples of this automated system pausing our PP account from hours to weeks. We sent over 500k in sales thru PP with little respect ever shown with it on auto and even making you feel like a thief for having a stolen credit card used at your site. 2 out of 1000s of payments!!! Give me a break!! Very bad experience for us!!! We felt excited when we began but the negatives became obvious. I use every other merchant payment system in the world with almost zero problems. I hear you! I sold few AD spot months ago and one month later paypal reserve the fund and told that the money is fraud. Keep asking me to pay what I owed (I withdrew the money but I didn't close the account and they run a $-172 on my account. )Now they reported me... yeah... I am going to fight with them...
Get something called a 'merchant account' Otherwise paypal runs your business, not you Should they decide to limit your account (which happens quite a lot) NONE of your orders will go through which means LOST business. With a merchant acount you have much more rights than with paypal. Sellers like paypal casue its so easy to set up, but it is so easy got screwed as well.
The New York Attorney General actually banned PayPal for a while because he said they were operating as a bank and not as a credit card company (which they claim to be). If you are a bank you have to go through a whole ton of regulation to prevent stuff like what you experienced. But since they are not a bank, they say they don't have to. Good luck with that. The merchants account companies are alot stricter for holding your money. Basically it works like this. if you have 15,000 in sales the merchant account companies will hold 15,000 of your money as insurance for charge backs.
Hmm never had such problems with Paypal but I will have to keep this in mind though. At the moment I am stuck with Paypal, no choice. - MENJ
What merchant accounts would you guys suggest (if we have to leave Paypal)? Are there any reliable/reputable ones out there that don't charge an arm and a leg to setup?

People process 6 and 7 figures a year with paypal. I doubt paypal considers $3000 / month "huge". Scripts do happen to fall under high risk though, try getting a merchant account if you don't think so.
There are some people who can sell anyting short of crack cocaine on paypal and not get a single notice while others simply withdraw too much and have thier whole account frozen. It is a random process for the most part that tends to work in paypals favor since they collect interest off your money. Sucks but not much you can do about it.
