Hi, I've submitted my website for inclusion in Dmoz twice till now (4 months between tries). No result so far. I believe there is something wrong with my website, but i cannot figure out what's wrong. There are 8 months since the last submission and I want to try again, but first I'd be happy to hear your suggestions and improvements that can be made to increase my chances. Thank you! PS: the website is the first one in my sig.
Probably because "lyrics" web sites have been done to death. What makes your web site unique amongst all the other lyric sites?
As Silky says, lyrics are done to death. There's also the issue of copyright, which is usually owned by the artists, and duplicate content. Read this newsletter about similar sites in the ODP (old, but still relevant): http://www.dmoz.org/newsletter/2001Sep/spam.html
I'm having the same problem, and no my niche (working dogs) is not saturated as I checked it out nor my site is duplicated, not unique etc, maybe that section of directory is no longer moderated.
Having unique content on lyrics website is quite difficult if not impossible. That's why I think it matters the way the information is offered to the user and if he finds what he was looking for on my site. I do not think my website is not accepted because of the content (there are 600+ lyrics website accepted). There must be something else.
That's exactly why they're unlikely to add any more. From the ODP's "Sites to Include" guidelines (emphasis mine): Unless your site offers never-before-published lyrics and unique articles, don't count on getting in.
I think that might be the reason for such heartache for those trying to get new sites listed. If they did not accept ANY sites that do not offer something new, then there would likely rarely ever be more then 5 or 10 sites per category, and sites like Topic with their syndicated content would not have any listings at all... I don't really think it's a matter of favoritism, but I do think that many (most?) sites are NOT treated equally. *shrug* Then again, to the OP, what makes you think your site has been rejected? There is really no way to tell, and any given site can site there for years before it is even looked at. Maybe it's just a matter of time before 600 comes to 601.
I did not take a look at your site but please remember that 4 months is not very long in a category that is heavy with submissions. Also editors tend to float towards categories that need to be developed, regardless of how many submitted sites there may be. The Lyrics cat has more in unreviewed sites than it has listed in the category so there are many sites to be reviewed and if the editor is going by date submitted, you would be low on the list.
