    Jennifer,

Alexa traffic and Google SERPs are not directly related. Alexa uses its own metrics and its toolbar to evaluate websites. If Google penalizes your website, all you will see in Alexa is a drop in search engine traffic reports.

Check your website in www.alexa.com/siteinfo and scroll down to "Where do {yourdomain}'s visitors come from?". If Google searches dropped, you'll get a glimpse there. As for your Alexa rank, that depends on visits. If the numbers went so high that you no longer rank, then something happened that put a block on the traffic flow.

A tip: use Alexa's search bar with your website's most important ranking terms and see what results you get.

Google still picks on HTML tags, but use them in moderation. What counts is that you have the necessary keywords in H1 titles, in the page title and in the meta description. Nothing in excess, just what's necessary to get your website and pages found.

On Alexa, there is insufficient data to see where our visitors come from. Also, you say 'If the numbers went so high that you no longer rank, then something happened that put a block on the traffic flow.'

If I knew the answer to that, our problems would be solved.

Yes, Jennifer. I can't offer a solution (I don't even know your website URL), but I tried to offer tips to help you get your investigation on the right track. :)

A few things you might want to check:
    - Reports in Google Webmaster Tool, Analytics and social media pages. The traffic trend can tell you around which date things started to get worse. That's helpful because it gives you a term to compare any actions performed on such date with the traffic results.
    - Your position in SERPs for the major search engines
    - Any change in backlink count and quality via tools provided by Ahrefs, MajesticSEO and OpenSiteExplorer.

i would say up till now we have over 150 million blogs on the Web today, a blog that has a ranking of less than 100,000 is doing great.
any blog or website having alexa rank below 50,000 is excellent.
you can ask people who like your blog to write a positive review for it on Alexa.
also you should write quality content at your site that people want to share.

Funnily enough our website has just stormed back into the Alexa rankings at 10 million without even doing anything, although we haven't seen any increase in visitors. It doesn't make any sense.

It's now up to 7 million rank and still no increase in visitors.

Makes me think Alexa isn't made out what it's supposed to be.

For example my Blog www.socialpositives.com have an Alexa Rank of near 140,000 in last June i rarely updated my blog.

Then i started to work hard on my Blog and updated with 2 or 3 posts per day suddenly blog traffic and Alexa rank increases and hits 34,000 in just 2 months.

If you have a Blog with high rankings on Alexa if its new or old that shows your Blog is active and updated regularly. But we should focus on Google Analytics how our Blog/Website worked in search results and how many people visiting.

Thanks for your advice but our site isn't a blog. But I understand by updating it regularly improves its ranking.

I'm starting to think the Alexa rankings aren't up to much. Our website is now ranked 2,000,000 in the world and has seen no increase in visitors.

Took me 2 weeks to be ranked by alexa. My website gets 50-100 views a day. It depends on the traffic you get. My first site took 1 day.

Install Alexa toolbar ( Chrome or Firefox ) and every day, visit your website ( main page ) and click the toolbar. This way, you will ping ( something like that ) Alexa to index it.
