Why my VPS system usage got Red Alert? - Proxy site problem

I have a proxy site using PHPPROXY latest version, for better performance, I ordered a VPS plan from PowerVPS. It is a Linux Cpanel VPS, I have 384 RAM there.

However, the system usage always got Reg Alert, which means 99% of the resouce has been used (but CPU usage is quite low, about 40% at most). Then I have to restart the VPS.

When 30 - 60 UV comes in per hour, the VPS works fine, but for more UV comes in, the VPS will hang within 5 minutes.

I am new to VPS, and is this stats normal? do I need to modify some options on my VPS? Please help, thank you!

The following screenshot shows the system usage stats of 40 UV / hour

Well, from what I understand PHPProxy script can be quite server intensive and if you run a busy proxy site, do expect high level of CPU usage.

Cpanel itself would need about 256mb of the RAM. I supposed you are using Apache web server. I guess you will need to do some tweaking and if possible, forgo the cpanel and apache and go with a vanilla plain VPS and install Lighttpd instead. That should help reduce the system load somewhat. Then turn off whatever you may not need to use.

Alternatively, you might want to upgrade to a full fledged dedicated server.

DirectAdmin control panel will use the least RAM out of the 3. However it'd be pretty hard to let go of cPanel, it's soooo good ;o

I'm having DirectAdmin with Apache 2.2.4, PHP 5.2.1, MySQL 5.0.37 and all other latest packages on my VPS. Believe me, mem usage is only 80MB max!!!

I think what you need is a control panel like DA and optimization for apache and mysql (if used)
