Recently...When i was trying to optimize my sites by placing various post on various sites i found that my Page Rank decreased to 0. I was shocked and tried to investigate but failed to get any conclusion.

Google is moving things around at the moment in SERPs. Wait a few days and see if the PR returns. If it doesn't then begin investigating further.

if it was PR3-4...I wish its just a part of Google dance if not then u must be under Google's so called sandbox effect bcoz of excessive low quality link building through made-for-seo directory networks, article submissions, excessive blog commenting and so on...

    1) now u shld stop it asap..try n get some quality and relevant backlinks to ur site from trusted sources(if possible frm .edu)
    2) send Re-consideration requests through Google's Webmaster Tools
    3) try for brand name establishment of ur website or company in www (use press releases, write e-book if possible)

    and best of luck!:)

backlinks are the way you increase your Pagerank, get as many backlinks as you can, the higher that website's page rank, the more is the value of the backlink.

The most obvious answers would be:-

    (1) - Some of your old backlinks have been deleted
    (2) - Some of your old backlinks have been changed from do-follow to no-follow by the appropriate website owner.

Is your website built under a dropped domain name? If so, thats the reason, if not, hmm weird, you permanently should build backlinks and post fresh content

If you have just built links using guest posting on other sites (like you have said) then there may be just one reason.
And that is, you are writing guest posts on irrelevant blogs/sites or the sites are involved in some blackhat SEO tactics.

    What I recommend is:
    1) Find good relevant blogs/sites that are in your niche.
    2) Also make sure that those blogs/sites are not involved in blackhat tactics.

    Two possible reasons --

    1) As you say - as part of your promotional campaign - you were trying to put your posts with link-backs to your site.

Did you buy those spots? How many in a space of 3 weeks?

If you had 20-30 blogs/sites linking to your site in a span of 20-30 days - it might not been natural with backlinks history of your site.
Due to nature, blogposts tend to get indexed very quickly - compared to other sites.
    So.............................

Result -- PR/SERP penalization for buying links. (possibility)

    2) No 2 possible reason might be selling links.:(

Assuming that your site's is clean with linking policy -

    The most possible reason ---

Too many links -too soon so as to manipulate search results - which is where Google comes with its linking policy.

It sounds like where ever most of your links were at - that site went down, or was banned from google. Example - if you had 100 links coming from a single article directory, and then that site was taken down, you lose all your links.

If you want good page rank, build as many links as possible from as many sites as possible.

The decrease in PR during non PR update period is generally taken as a punishment, most probably for selling links or violating the google's policy on link building. Analyze the reason for decrease in PR and undo the mistake.
