hmmm, yeah - I bought a few when I was just learning about linking and didn't know any better....

Didn't really have a very positive effect at all. Don't think google even noticed them.

I disagree with the view that they are worthless. Here's why

    1. They are 1-way links
    2. They are permanent (ish)
    3. You control the anchor text
    4. You can have deep links
    5. They're very cheap

Points 3 and 4 are particularly important because they're usually difficult to get (without spending money) .

There IS such a thing as a worthless link.

    1) 1-way links are good but only if they count.
    2) No they're not. Word cloud sites disappear after they lose PR.
    3) Yes, but search engines pay attention to the context of the link...if its a random link that isn't in any context (like a paragraph of meaningful text) or its unrelated to other text on the page, or the only text are links, the link is discounted and next to worthless, if not completely worthless.
    4) See point 3.
    5) They may be cheap but it's better to get real links form real web sites, that last, and are related to your site.

I disagree with PR 4 costing you $30. My site is younger than a year with a PR 4 and I have spent less than 20 AUD on it.

Yes, that's true, but I don't think there's much such as a BAD link. It can be close to being worthless, but I really DON'T think that a link can hurt, not even if from the most despicable site.

But that's my opinion, I have no evidence to prove it, but neither have you I suppose...

To use your example of that PR4 word cloud page, asxsuming even 300 links are sold, the value to you is .85 * 4 /300 -- do the math yourself. Not worth a heck of a lot, is it?

This is especially true for the latest scam - selling links from a student page at a university or college on an EDU domain. That's pretty much worthless.

You can easily make your link appear in better context.

Just buy several spots alonside each other, and use similar phrases/ semantics.

With wordclouds you are just ASKING TO BE SCAMMED. Someone will buy an expired pr6 domain, sell links for $10 bucks a piece, then let the domain expire after all its fake pr is gone.

They make a new wordcloud everyday and pull in a living wage scamming people.

Beware of wordclouds, I repped you thread starter. Stop being ignorant people, don't try to justify your purchases they are absolutely wortheless 90% of the time, special cases being like when a cool DP'er offers wordcloud links for free!

    Wordclouds target "impulse buyers"

Impulse buyers are the ones who get scammed in any case. You see pr6 links for sale for $5 and no red flags go up.

Some people really don't know any better and that's why I posted this. When I started out, I also purchased one of those links and 3 months later the domain expired.

Actually if Alexa rank is sgoing DOWN it's good, it means more traffic to your site.

But link building is the right way to go, only I would basicly suggest you exchange/buy links, get reviews, blog posts, submit to directories, exchange/buy banners, advertise in general but you've got to know that whatever you do, in such a competitive sector, unless you do it really big, it's going to be tough.

Ideally you should distinguish yourself and show something that others don't have, otherwise why yours and not one of the other thousands out there?

    Good luck! ;)

What about blogs? Are the links on blogs still worth the money? I think higher PR blogs links are still good. I've tried articles. $7 article is a nice idea. Because the links I may get back might be more worthwhile than $7 blog links.

Never really been interested in word clouds myself.....but that's probably because I never really understood them.

Not that there is really anything to understand - I was just too busy with other things!
