i see many idiots here :) why would google care to rank on number 1 in their own search engine?

by then people are already using their search engine, why they wanna let people go back to their homepage?!

and yes, a good sign that Google doesn't manipulate.

If you are already using google , that mean they are n:1 .
So no need to list their site in the results and leave the competition for other sites .
I wonder why Yahoo or MSN arent in the first positions

I laughed when I found this post, and concluded the same thing as a couple early posters, that google felt it had no need to reinforce the fact that it is a search engine to people using its search engine.

Then I promptly went over to Yahoo, where although it ranks itself number one, has google splashed over the page about five times. Google came up twice in the automated keyword suggestions from the search box, and then has the top two "Also try:" suggestions, as well as the #2 spot in the search results. So basically, Yahoo recognizes that people typing in "search engine" are probably looking for google, and yet it still puts itself above Google in the rankings.

If anybody is appreciating Google for giving democrat result then I must remind you this.... Please search "search kind and google issue" you will definitely find that Google did a big partiality and Result tampering to establish itself as a big giant.
They don't want it self to see themselves on top for search engine that is y they are not there. Otherwise nothing to do with their automated system.

Hah, AltaVista is #1, then Dogpile. Didn't know AltaVista was still going, I thought Yahoo! bought them?

they don't need to be number 1 in a search engine that they created because you are using it anyway

Regardless of what other people say, google should still rank itself #1 for "search engine" since that would be a highly relevant result.

The simple fact is that no search engine returns 100% relevant results all the time and for google this is just one of those times.

Yahoo on the other hand returns results perfectly.
    1. Yahoo
    2. Google
    3. etc.

Not to say Yahoo is perfect but, needless to say, it is obviously better for this one term.
