I've always wondered why Yahoo constantly tops the Alexa ranks... Can anyone enlighten me? Many thanks, Joe
They get the most traffic in the world, while Google is number 1 in many countries yahoo is still number 1 over all because it has so much more stuff than just search engine
Because Yahoo is not only a search engine. They're a huge news site, they have the biggest and most used email service in the world, they have yahoo answers, they have yahoo games, and a bunch of other stuff.
Yahoo is not just a search engine like Google (although Google is diversifying); it is a complete portal and receives traffic to all those sections. Also unlike Google, their email service is hosted on the same domain, while Gmail is on a different domain which splits Google’s traffic and traffic rank.
except for yahoo mail being popular,i think this has a big factor, google has a separate domain for most services and countries. yahoo uses subdomains for services and countries. for alexa, traffic from subdomains goes towards the top level domain. if yahoo's subdomains were counted separately, then google may take the #1 spot.
spot on... but, actually, yahoo uses different domains as well.. and also they also collaborate with local companies, such as in Australia channel 7 and Yahoo merge together.. and they use .com.au domain.. but things like domains.yahoo.com, news.yahoo.com and most importantly sports.yahoo.com has billions of pages and uncountable visits each day.. I think that's why.
GMail in the UK is directed via mail.google.com - Is it different elsewhere or am I missing something? Why is everyone suggesting Gmail is a separate domain?
Why Google will most likely not take up the #1 spot is that Alexa counts the traffic differently from Google.com, Google.co.uk, Google.co.jp etc as they are all separate domains. Unlike Yahoo, Yahoo.com, Yahoo.co.uk etc. which are all sub-domians.
apart from search product, yahoo almost all product will be #1 popular, still gets a good traffic and alexa love that
Hey, That's pretty easy Yahoo! use sub-domains for each country, Alexa count main domain. While Google, have it's own website for each language, let's say - if Google had the same sub-domains, they was n.1 long time ago
may be because of this http://www.google.com/search?&q=site:yahoo.com 454,000,000 from yahoo.com http://www.google.com/search?&q=site:google.com 27,200,000 from google.com
Yahoo has good services, like mostly people uses yahoo mail. Yahoo finance, Geocities. because of why it ranks. But i don't understand why Alexa required?
Alexa give ranks based on Traffic. Since long lasting Yahoo is the pioneer in providing Free Chat services and many other useful services, so visitors are coming more on yahoo not for search but to use such services. Google is getting most of traffic as being a search engine. Yahoo Traffic > Google Traffic | Google Search > Yahoo Search
Google or Yahoo are the ones on top It is not a big difference if Yahoo or Google are on the top They are both high ranked, lol
You are forgetting about China and Japan - yahoo is used (yes even search) by up to 70% of the population and Google is lucky to get 30% of the search traffic .... Google will never dominate China or japan .... and that's a fair wack of the market ....
