Why is Tibet missing in Google Earth?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by drmike, Apr 12, 2008.

I do not understand this... it is impossible to find Tibet on Google Earth. If you type Tibet into the search it just takes you to a high up view of China... if you search for Potala Palace it says no results match your search... why is Google Earth hiding Tibet?

Does anyone have any information on this?

I just wanted to answer that the reason why there is no Tibet is the same why there is no USSR on Google Maps, but actually there are 11000 places for USSR only in United States, including embassy of USSR in Washington‎. So, yes Google is hiding Tibet because it is evil and because it is afraid if Chinese.

Maybe they just haven't photographed it yet. In Australia only about 20% of the country or even less in photographed.

This is news to me. About a year ago I was using Google Earth to follow the mountain valleys and such. I had an idea to follow the path of the guy in Seven Years In Tibet and offer it as some kind of web content on a site... true I was not trying to find settlements and such at that point... but did not notice anything amiss... hmmmm.

Maybe it does have to do with the Chinese occupation and wanting to avoid accusations of spying?

Have you done a direct scrutiny? That is just zoom in where these things are suppose to be? Maybe Google just hasn't bothered to mark the places you seek.

actually i think the reason the can't take photos of places like that is because it would be just like spying on them and it might break some public treaty stuff or what ever. We all know theres secret spying on both sides with military cameras but they don't want pictures taken over those countries. or at least thats the most logical reason i would think.

May be, google thought that Tibet was a part of China and hence there was no need to name it differently...

I don't know, but what makes it even weirder, when you try to search on Google to find why Tibet and Potala Palace are missing it returns result, but nothing relevent.

Yeah, that may be the reason. Its a high altitude place and most of the time covered by clouds.

Probably Google still haven't been given lots of access to China. Google.cn already face a lot of trouble.

Simple, that's where Peter Abbay lives, he's the banker from deal or no deal. Try finding a picture of him, it doesn't exist, just like Tibet.

China’s gov. can do whatever they like. At the end of the day it's their territory and they impose all the rules. Google will do whatever Chinese gov tells them to do if they want to put their foot into Chinese market and grab a share in China's booming economy.
