I run a site, http://www.haloreachbeta.com. It ranks 1st on google for the keywords "halo reach beta", which is great. However, my real goal is the keyword "halo reach". Here, my site ranks 37th. Meanwhile, a competitor site (haloreachinfo.com) ranks 3rd for that keyword, and I'm a bit miffed as to why. Our domain names are similar, both containing but not exactly the keyword, so they shouldn't be gaining anything there. We're both basically the same pagerank. We're both basically the same age. We both have similar content. According to the backlink checkers I've run, it looks like I have about twice as many backlinks including links from a couple PR8 sites in the same category. I see no backlinks from high PR content related sites for my competitor's site. So what is putting them so far ahead of me?
from a very quick look.. the other sire is a pr3 yours is pr2 so not "basically the same" if you look at the text cached version of the pages in google you will see their onsite seo is a bit better. on the other site, header graphic and footer both link back to the home page with relevant text. your page ... top link just says home, footer link goes to your home page but says "RoopleTheme" ?? the other user has 40 sig links form DP forums with the words "halo reach" you have 27 with "halo reach beta"
Hmmm, thanks for the notes. Do the header/footer links really matter? I was under the impression that a few internal links didn't make a big difference, especially since there are hundreds of internal links from one page to another within the site anyway. I wouldn't think a few more DP sig links would make a difference since the DP forums are totally unrelated content. I have some extremely relevant backlinks including a few PR8 gaming blogs, and one from the official bungie halo reach site itself that I would think would count for a LOT more. However, I think the exact keyword match is probably the difference here. Mine typically have an anchor text of "halo reach beta" (which I rank first for and he is out of the top 100), whereas his typically have the exact "halo reach" phrase.
well having an internal footer index link with alt txt of "RoopleTheme" is not going to help you rank for "halo reach" is it and that footer link is the only internal backlink to your home page with text other than "home" that i spotted with a VERY QUICK look. How you link internally with alt txt, title tags and anchor text IS important. you said then start using that as the text in your links then, including internal links. Having a link from a pr8 blog only means it's home page is pr8 ... what is the pr of the page with the link ? and how many other links on that page ?
