tell me something.. XD it seems that not many websites get listed in this directory compared to Yahoo haha... why is it important to get listed here? :-/ do you think this is a must?
*sigh* It's not important, and it sure ain't no must. It's just a link, not a particularly good one at that, lost in a link farm without visitors. How's the weather around your parts? Here we have 30% probability of rain at night, but sunny tomorrow, 24C! Balmy. I will paint some watercolors, do a bit of gardening... I think I'll put lettuce in my sandwich. Do you think I should? I like to put barbecue sauce instead of mustard. I just trimmed the Japanese maple and I found a little chipmunk dug a hole under my patio... I bet there are tunnels galore by now. They're so cute. Speaking of cute, my neighbors bought a puppy. Looks like a yellow lab but I am not an expert. I hope he won't scare my birds, but so far he doesn't sound like a barker. My resident cardinals had two babies so far this summer. They come to the feeder every day.
It's not a must but Yahoo gets accepted a lot quicker because they charge lots of money for commercial listings and DMOZ receives thousands of submissions and the editors are volunteers and it takes a while because DMOZ has strict submission policies.
How long is a while, I submitted several months ago but I am still not listed. I deffo submitted to the correct category as I checked where my competitors where listed.... Driving me nuts!
A while is as long as a piece of string but longer than a bit of string. Site reviews can take many years. Other sites have been listed in seconds. There is no priority or direction in DMOZ as to what sites in what categories are reviewed first, last, or anywhere inbetween - that is by design and the editors wouldn't have it any other way. If you get reviewed and rejected you will never be told either so it may never be listed and you wouldn't know. You need a shrink then. I am sure minstrel, if he is around, can give you some professional services for a reasonable fee. If you would rather solve the problem for free, then just forget about it. Submit, forget, if it ever gets listed the chances are you will not notice any difference in visitors or PR or anything else that matters to someone in competition with others. Don't waste your brainpower thinking about it, just focus on the things you can influence, like improving your site and working on other marketing techniques. Good luck
I've submitted at least six websites to DMOZ with some being over two years ago. None of my sites ever get listed. They are not bad sites. I'm on page 2 of Google for my main keyword and I have a PR of 3..so-so I guess but still..
Your PR is not even looked at by editors, so it could likely be a 10 and still would not get listed. Your SERPs don't really matter either, though many editors do use search engines to find submissions. Your site layout does not even matter, so long as your links are working and the content is there... The only two things that make a difference on getting listed are: ORIGINAL content Having an ACTIVE editor in the category you submitted too In MOST instances the sites submitted have.. ... blank pages (including the default blogroll and ABOUT info from a basic wordpress install, or the like). ... Gleaned content (I'm amazed at the number of sites with NOTHING unique and copy/pasted content) ... not enough content ( a lot of times, just a page or two is not enough) I'm not saying your site fits in the above, as there is a greater chance that there is no active editor, and now that Annie is gone, there is no active editall *shrug* Though, if you have not submitted in 2007 go on, try again
It does make you wonder how much money is minstrel making on this forum. Hey we need lawyer which will represent people in law suits against AOL since DMOZ has no warning about it being health risk.
And that is your opinion? Webmasters usually love their own sites and think they are the best thing since sliced bread even when an average 10 year old could have done better. If they are not bad in your view then they must at best be mediocre, and there are hundreds of millions of mediocre sites. With millions of sites to pick from when an editor goes to list their next site they will be drawn (a) towards the great sites, not the mediocre ones, and (b) if submitted they will go for the submissions that stand out - not through hype but by being perfectly compliant with the DMOZ way, i.e. bland and objective. Mediocre sites can still make it through but editors have got more and more picky over the years so it will be slower on average. Besides, a great site, rather than a mediocre one, is better for the punters you want to visit regardless of DMOZ, which will do nothing for your marketing in any case.
I wouldn't bother too much after you submit. If you want to get into a directory pay Yahoo and get into theirs. However, if you really want to get in (and there are better ways of using your time) then you can try one of two things: 1. Go to http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10 , register and ask where your site is. 2. Find out the editor of the section you submitted, or if there isn't one the editor of the parent directory. Just search for the text "Category editor" and their profile will be listed there, with an email link. Despite the fact that I used to be a reasonably active editor in odp - and am still rather fond of it - I haven't followed either of the two suggestions after my sites have not been listed.
You haven't read the submission guidelines have you? Resource Zone does NOT give status checks Spamming an editor by email is a good way to get the editor to deny your site. WTF? So you were just lying to him? (Yes, I count making stuff up lying) Dispecable!
