Ive gone into a new keyword and started work on a a few weeks back. I hit page 5 on google, while being none existent before I started. Now I'm the max position I have been thus far is 41 on .com and .co.uk. I dunno what happens or why it happens, but when i hit 41 (usually before I go to bed) by the time I check in the morning I'm way back on page 7 or in-between. This has been happening for the past 4 days, and I really don't understand why. It cannot be the PR dance because my site had been redundant until a few weeks back. Changes in algo really doesn't explain anything either, because I wouldn't be dancing so much. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks
It goes up and down more frequently the further you go down the pages. Things steady down when you are on page 1!
Yes you are likely checking different Google data centers when you search at different times in the day. As for maxing out at position 41, I believe this is a penalty that many websites experience. It may be triggered by many things, but it seems to affect affiliate websites frequently. You might want to try to hide your affiliate links in redirects on your own server. It could just be that you don't have good enough backlinks to rank any higher.
Uh What have backlinks got to do with SERPS? I have masses of page 1 SERPS but I don't do linking so have sites on page 1 of Google with (I assume) no backlinks and no PR!!! Here is an example (I have a few hundred like this to!) Google "Hire The W0rlds Best SE0" On Google.co.uk I have the top for links and link three sitesnccess dot net (this I purchased on DP a few weeks ago and redid) is in position three with no PR and only backlinks will be from previous owner. Not the best example I know - but I can find an example of a site I registered recently with no PR or backlinks if you like. Go figure LOL
It is normal, especially for new sites, to move up and down in Google like this. It can make for crazy traffic one day, and poor traffic the next! The PR most people refer to is toolbar pagerank, and it is not as important as the internal pagerank Google uses to rank sites.
That's great if you don't mind just getting rankings for phrases that nobody searches for. Those junk phrases you can rank high with onpage optimization alone. If you want rankings for phrases that actually produce traffic, backlinks are crucial for rankings. You will never find a website ranking high for a competitive keyword without links. It is no longer 1990. Rankings for competitive keywords are decided almost purely on backlinks alone. That's what backlinks have to do with seo. Obviously you're not really the world's best seo, or you would've known that.
vansterdam I disagree I have my own and clients sites with 30,000,000 plus competitors on page 1 with no backlinks whatsoever. I expected and anticipated such a response though. Pick any SEO related search term you like dude and I will put a site on page 1 within a month with no backlinks what so ever to prove it if you like? I would prefer it if the SEO search term included either the word "commission" or the word "hire" though as Wikipedia are welcome to all their (Non Converting) traffic for just "SEO" if you get my drift? I mean a brand new site - as yet (domain) unregistered btw and a month is just being conservative it can be done quicker than that! I will register a domain and prove what I say is true! I would also do so without submitting the new domain/site to any of the SE's. I would do that by using one of my sites where it can be found by them so with just 1 backlink alone I will take any hire or commission & SEO related challenge you would like to offer as something you would consider worthy of such a challenge??
Well, it seems that other websites in your same niche have more quality links compare to you. You better get huge volume of quality links(niche-related) pointing to your pages using your right keywords in your anchor text. That will be your key on stabilizing your ranking on the top position.
The same thing happens to my site. I think it is part of the google dance. When it happens to a word I am working on it does it for a while than settles in the higher position.
The actual domain has been registered for over a year...hasn't been worked on for half a year though so that may be the problem
U know I have been bouncing like that 2 but I bounce between position 5 out of ten and the third page. I think that google is just going through another transition, one thing certain though build those backlinks beat the number one spot for your keyword and you will be golden.
