seriously, why are there so many startup companies for search engines? it seems these days none of them have a chance at making tons of money so why is there still such a desire to expand the market... i mean, do they assume that market demand will glorify them eventually?

Not that I would start one, but my guess is that they find something wrong or missing with the current search engines and wanna try making their own with does features!

Google also started as "no one" compared to Yahoo and what is it now... they probably believe the have something new and better. If people love it, they might grow quickly.

Trying to make something new is better than just talking :D No one can make behind Google.....but people are trying....which I believe as good sign. The owner or company who make any new search engine (may be crappy one) too doesn't use their own search engine as they use Google in everyday. Making anything new doesn't mean that you've to go top of all. It's just a thing that everyone do....some get success and some are not.

Yes I think it's like TimeHacker is saying. They think they got something better or more unique and belive in it. Everyone start as a no one but that doesn't mean that they must fail.
